View Full Version : Glucose Tolerance Test

Hi everyone,

I had my glucose tolerance test done today at the lab. It was a bad experience. First off, I had low blood sugar by the time I got there at 8 AM (I walked to the place to get some exercise-bad idea #1). They had to draw blood for some other tests and I ended up blacking out after they drew the blood even though I was struggling not to. Then they started the GTT, I drank the orange drink and I was fine. During the last hour of the GTT, my sugar went low again, and I had to eat something. They were having trouble drawing my blood because I got the shakes and stiffened up. The lab called my doctor and he said to skip the last reading. Has this happened to anybody else? I felt really stupid because I couldn't finish the test. Please, anybody out there had the same thing? Somehow hearing that will make me feel alot better.

Hiya deedee, I'm sorry you had to experience a insulin reaction while your trying to get blood work done, I can imagine how embarrassing and annoying that was for you. I relate to having low's (as my name states), in the past year alone I have passed out 15+ times from hypo's. I have had people tell me I start acting all crazy, running into walls, convulsion's, acting drunk, chewing on a screwdriver and a number of other wild things. I guess I should state before others form a opinion about my control, I have been a Type 1 since I was 7, I test blood sugars at least 5 times a day, I exercise regularly and count carbs, I'm on Humalog/ Lantus and my last aic was 5.3. Unfortunately I have lost the majority of my awareness to low's, so when I drop anymore I usually drop hard and pass out. I wish I could tell you it will get better, but it won't, you can try to control it the best you can and hopefully you will be able to, but with this disease there are no guarantees on anything. Heh, didn't mean to go on rambling, just wanted to let you know your not alone and these things happen, we just have to look to other diabetics for support, since nobody else could ever understand what we go through. Take care
