View Full Version : My new foot - update

Three days after my cast came off, it feels so GOOD! At the end of the day, it is so nice to not have that huge weight pressing down on my foot. The rest of the scabs came off yesterday and I am putting vitamin E on the scar. It kinda weirds me out that part of it is numb, I guess that will come back with time. The difference between the two feet is great. There is no big angry lump where the bunion was, but the swelling is pretty significant. Although the foot is thinner, when I set the two feet down side by side, the post surgery foot is thicker and rounder than the other.

Even though the DR. said I could wear my own shoe (Good luck!), usually a women's 9W, I went to Payless and bought a pair of big ugly black velcro shoes, Men's size 9W!! So much for my own shoe! The velcro is great, it opens up really big to slip my foot in.

When I was at the Dr.'s office getting the cast off on Thurs., I told him that I would be going right to the Hosp. for the Xrays he wanted me to bring to my appt. next Wed. The Dr. actually stopped by the Hosp. on Fri. to see them early. What a guy. He said I'm not forming bone around the osteotomy yet. I am not to put any weight on the foot yet, and I MUST wear a shoe to protect it. He pushed my appt. back a week to the 9th. This makes me nervous, being out of the cast and all. I'm afraid to do much, I really don't want to hit my foot or something. So sad. Kim

Kim-
I am so sorry! At least your doctor noticed the bone wasn't forming now instead of almost 5 months later like mine :( I am sure they can do something non-surgically to help it along, just be careful!

Good luck and keep us updated :)

Kim,
I've been thinking about you, wondering how you are. I have no idea how I missed this post. Last one I saw, you were hobbling in garage, looking for your husband's shoes.
I am so sorry your healing is progressing so slowly. (Admittedly a little jealous that you have such a caring and communicative surgeon.) I can't remember your age, but even if you're younger, I wonder if your diet has sufficient calcium/magnesium? LC's are good, but also lots of fresh greens, and skim dairy, or were you lactose intolerant? I force 3 dairy, skim milk or lofat cottage cheese, etc., and take 1500 mg calcium with magnesium & zinc in addition to my multi and B. Weather permitting, not too much recently in Branson, I sit on the deck for some sun, foot propped up on pillows, the heat feels good.
Did he mention any sort of bone stimulation therapy? I have no experience, but am really curious about this.
I don't know your situation, but look at aircast boots. If its tight, you might consider looking on Ebay for a used one. It would protect your foot, it's removeable, and you could save it for the next foot op. If you could find a cryo cuff, some are separate, some are made to fit IN the boot, the next foot might be much more comfy for you, provided your Doc is ok with it. The compression can be adjusted for swelling, and different levels of support for different levels of rehab. I think the comfort level brings compliance up, so more Docs are taking them more seriously. I'm going to try to get a used one, and hopefully convince him not to put any more fiberglass on me.
Post again soon, let us know how you are. I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner. I'm praying for you. Hang on! Kim

Kim, So sorry to hear about your bone. Hope all goes well with your appointment on the 9th. Be careful the next few days. I didn't get a cast after my surgery - just surgical shoes. I walked a few steps today finally. Things are looking up. Take care, I'll be thinking about you. Deb
