View Full Version : Anyone get the shakes or tremble

I am considerably overweight and have never exercised. I started out on the treadmill at 1.8 mph for 20 min. Felt pretty good and after about 5 days went up to 2mpg and 25 min. During the workout I started getting weak feeling and my legs felt like jello. When I got off the treadmill I had the shakes so bad my hands were just trembling. I laid down and ate a few pretzels and within about 15 min I started to feel better, however, even the next day I still did not feel 100%. Has this ever happened to anyone? Do you think it could be too much adrenaline my body is producing or maybe low blood sugar...? I am very sensitive to adrenaline as I tend to get panic attacks, anxiety and cannot handle caffeine, diet pills, etc....Could my body be producing too much adrenline when I exercise. I had a stress test about 6 months ago and it came out fine, but it only lasted about 7 minutes...it seems the longer I exercise the worse I feel...it just scares me that it could be my heart, but yet my dr says I'm fine....although he said that before the exercise started. I haven't told him about the episodes since starting exercising. Thx for any info.

Because you posted this on the diabetes board, may I assume that you're diabetic? And, if so, what medications are you taking?

It is quite possible that your blood sugar became too low after exercising. Exercise will use a lot of available blood glucose, and the effects last up to 36 hours. Because you felt somewhat better after eating some pretzels, it's quite possible it was low blood sugar. And, while the pretzels helped immediately, the effects of the exercise may have continued for a while, causing your blood sugar to never stay up to a normal level.

Do you have a blood glucose meter? If so, the best thing to do is to test frequently, especially on days you exercise. If your blood sugar is less than 70, you should treat for low blood sugar. It's a good idea to test before and after exercising. If you are low after exercising, be sure to test several times during that day and early the next to make sure you're above 70.

Actually I am not a diabetic,,,,I posted on this board because I thought if it related to low blood sugar someone here would know. I do not have a meter but have thought about buying one....can't hurt to have one right? It just seems I get this way after exercising more than any other time. What is a good meter to buy,,,I don't want to invest alot as I will only probably use it occasionally....THx for the feedback

I also get that too. My mom is a diabetic and when I went into one of those horrible shakey moments and almost passed out. My mom (had an episode like mine due to her medication a week or two earlier and saw the signs) had me pop a piece of candy, drink some pop and then tested my blood sugar which seemed to be low. (but higher after the sugar intake I had.)

I'm keeping track of what my sugar is in the morning and when I go to bed so when I see my endocrinologist, I'll see if this is related to a thyroid problem. So far, every morning and night it seems to be low even a few hours of eating something (even rice and pasta)

In the meanwhihle I have to make sure I eat a small amount every two hours so I don't pass out. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif

Check out this page for different meters.

These are the ones my mom has. (she has many because they are covered under her insurance, however the TEST STRIPS might be the most expensive thing you buy extra. She told me for one of her meters, 50 test strips costs $50 unless she gets it covered under insurance) You will also need alcohol swabs/packets and more lancets if you want to keep checking. They give you a beginning amount with the meter.

She has this one right now - brand new that she got free at a diabetic show:

And this is her old meter that I'm using right now:

DarkStarWon,
You should definitely see an endocrinologist if the condition worsens or becomes more frequent. This is one of the problems I have been having that keeps getting progressively worse. I have even passed out a few times. I am not diabetic, but the endocrinologist I am seeing has labelled me "pre-diabetic", for whatever that's worth. I get lots of episodes of low blood sugar. I have some other related problems like high blood pressure and female problems too.

I strongly suggest that you try to become more aware of that funky, weak feeling when it comes on because eventually it starts hitting you like a brick wall instead of a slow-moving vehicle off in the distance. You should eat something when you feel that way-but try to stay away from high carbs and high sugar. Have some carbs or sweets with some protiens so that you get your immediate fix and then the proteins will sustain you for later. You will see people writing about this all the time on these boards.

You should also consider that this might be another condition such as anemia or high blood pressure. You should probably see your family doctor and have them run some general tests to rule out the obvious. Good Luck!

If you phone some of the meter companies...they will sometime send you one for free.....I have never had to pay for mine...yet my insurance would cover it.

Also you might want to eat one fruit and one carb before exercising...that will usually help you not go ;ow

Hello, I used to get that too and I'm not diabetic either. (Diabetes runs in my family, so I do make sure I get regular check-ups and blood tests.) I find that you can't skimp on food or water. You need carbohydrates when you exercise for energy, so low-carb. stuff is out or you'll get dizzy. You have to drink lots of water to keep the body hydrated, because you do loose water through perspiration. Deydration can also cause dizziness. Tireness is probably caused from low carbs or vitaim deficiency. This does not mean to over-eat. Just keep your portions to single servings. Bananas and orange juice are good for upping the blood sugar and increasing potassium, which is also need for energy. I don't get dizzy or weak when I exercise anymore, but I eat 1400 cal. and between 16-39 grams of total fat per day. I do not cheat myself out of any meals.
