View Full Version : Random thoughts

First I would like to apologize if this has already been asked in a previous post. Okay my problem is kind of hard to explain but I'll do my best:

Every so often, when I space out or I'm doing something that doesn't require too much thought, like driving or watching TV, I have these really random thoughts. For example, the other day I was in my bathroom putting on my make up when I thought "we have to get rid of all of these oranges". Its almost like its somebody else's thought but I seriously don't think I'm psychic or anything like that. This has been happening for almost my entire life. Usually I forget about it a short time after and I don't remember that it's happened until it happens again (I'm not exactly sure why I'm remembering now). Another thing is (and I'm not really sure if this is related or not) I remember when I was little, before I would go to bed, I would lay there and fantasize about horses, dresses, etc. (normal little girl thoughts) when all of a sudden something random would take over, like a hamster running on a wheel. And the only way to get that image out of my head would be to sit up, open my eyes, and really concentrate on something else.

I've been battling depression for about 10 years and I'm a horrible hypochondriac  .

Is this something I should be concerned with?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Aarena,

I have a very similar problem.

I find that my mind is ALWAYS busy. I'm ALWAYS thinking about all kids of different stuff that is totally unconnected. Even when I am in bed and trying to get to sleep (which is difficult) I will find myself thinking of past experiences, movie clips, songs in my head, etc.

I am taking a med called flupenthixol to calm me down. It has made a difference but not as much as I think I need.

Hope it helps.

Hedge ~

Everybody gets random thoughts- it just seems that you get them more frequently than most. If your random thoughts were fear-producing, then I'd say you might have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (I have it), but since these thoughts don't seem to be interfering with your life, I'd say that, no, you don't have anything to worry about. God bless!

I frequently have random and confusing thoughts. I believe its called intrusive thinking.

An intrusive thought is indeed a bizarre thought that randomly pops up in someone's mind and interrupts their normal train of thought. Most people just shrug it off, say, "That was odd. Why'd I think that?" and move on, but OCD-ers like myself are unable to do so. Intrusive thoughts that cause fear and repeat over and over are clinical obsessions.
