I was wondering how long after extractions is it usual to still be in pain? I had three teeth removed last Thursday- one on the bottom right and two next to each other bottom left. The bottom right has more or less stopped hurting now and I have to go back to have the stitches removed this Thursday. The gap on the left is still intermittently throbbing and I don't want to take many more painkillers as I have a sensitive stomach. I was probably being overly optimistic as I thought I'd feel like going out by now but with this pain and the cold weather outside I can't. I had the teeth out by sedation dentistry and the roots were massive- I brought the teeth home! Is there anything else to lessen the pain apart from pills?

Did they tell you anything about rinsing your mouth with warm salty water? When I had all of my extractions for dentures they told me to gently swish it in my mouth as many times a day as I could....it really helps with the healing process, and it is very soothing. My oral surgeon also told me to take ibuprofen for the pain....Hope this helps...

thanks Jackie- I was using a mouthwash but I'm rinsing with salt water now. I 've come to the conclusion that some of the pain seems to be coming from my jaw so I figure maybe it's where he stretched it to remove the teeth- it's a dragging pain. Hopefully it will stop soon.

I had a tooth pulled yesterday - dentist had to break it apart to get it out! It bled for over 5 hours - I was really getting worried - but it finally stopped - did feel some pain last night and maybe just alittle bit today but nothing much. I am going to rinse with salt water when I get home from work today.
