I called into a local radio talkshow yesterday. Its an "ask the doctor" type of program. I explained about my low blood sugar episodes, my age and body type and he gave me some advice that I'd like to pass along. Of course, you should always check these things out with your doctor first.
1. Drink lots of water.
2. Read a book called the Yeast Connection. (There is also the Yeast Connection cookbook)
3. Try health supplements such as:
acidophillus
proflora
chisandra
4. Eat complex carbohydrates and proteins. Stay away from simple carbs completely.

Thank you! I needed info! It was really helpful. My dad is the one who has diabetes, but I know all about it, and I told these hints to him and he was ever so thankful. So thanks again for your posting!

I am not so good at differentiating between carbohydrates & simple carbs. also I have read on the sight people talk about counting carbs. I really would not know where to start. Can you be so kind as to list me a few simple carbs, and why are they best? I am insulin dependent and eat Bread Pasta or rice with every meal ie Toast for breakfast Sandwich for lunch and something with Pasta or Rice for tea. I snack on the odd Bannana but stil my sugar levels rise so high that I often have Keytones. My nurse has told me to inject once more in the morning with my usual injection making 5 injections a day. (mix of slow and fast acting. So I would really appreciate some of your ideas for slow carbs or simple carbs. I know this might sound a bit nieave, but I keep on reading lots of conflicting info, but will try anything to get well.

Some of the types of carbs I've cut out of my diet are pasta, rice, white bread, potatoes, bagels, cakes, muffins, cereal, any corn products, etc. Sometimes I have a little on the side, but I don't sit down for a whole bowl of pasta with something else on the side. Not anymore. My diet now consists of foods high in protien like beef, rabbit, lamb, pork, chicken, turkey and fish and high in fiber like whole grains, selected fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts. I also eat alot of low fat cottage cheese and greens. I don't drink alcohol, I occasionally have a drink-like once a month if that. This diet has helped curb my sharp drops in blood sugar and its also helped me to lose about 15 lbs. I'm so used to it now, that its not a diet for me any longer. Its natural eating habits now. You should check with your doc, but eating alot of bread and pasta doesn't sound like the right diet for a diabetic. Alos, keep in mind I am not diabetic-I get hypoglycemia. This is the diet recommended by my nutritionist. You should check with your doc if you haven't already.
