Did anyone happen to catch Oprah on 5/1? I didn't actually see the show but I saw this on her website. Anyway, she had a woman on her show who was overweight. She would drink 300 ozs of soda pop per day! Oprah's experts went into the woman's home, went through her cabinets and found that most of the stuff she had were refined carbohydrates and sugary foods. They replaced all of that poison with healthy alternatives. They told her to cut out the sugar, flour, pop, etc. She walked at least 30 minutes, 7 days a week. Of course, she was required to do more cardio and strength training, also. 3 months later, she had lost an amazing 43 pounds!!!

Well I just caught a small part of it. The part when they went into the cupboard and pointed out the bad stuff.
I got frustrated and turned the channel. All I saw was the guy saying basically everything was bad.
So what can you eat? Is there any good foods left after that?

That's true about the episode. They should have given some advice on what to eat.

I saw it too. She looked amazing. She just ate healthy food and cut out flour, sugar, and certain kinds of fats. I think it is listed on Oprahs web site.

Most people know what they SHOULD be eating. Problem is most of us don't want to eat the right things. Face it, apples don't taste nearly as good as donuts.

I ordered the book "The Owners Manual" from Amazon and still waiting for it to arrive. It's true what they said on the show, you need to stay away from the five food groups they talked about. Not only will cause weight gain, but more importantly - health risks. Quick story, my parents both have diabetes and high blood pressure. So, they decided to start the South Beach Diet. Although, I'm not a big fan of structured diets, it worked for them. They mainly consumed water, proteins (i.e. chicken, raw nuts, raw peanut butter) and lots of fresh vegetables in the beggining. Then, they slowly introduced "good carbs" (i.e. sweet potatoes, carrotts, some fruits) They both reduced their blood pressure and now are on lower insulin levels! Think about it, none of the cavemen were overweight. All they had to eat was water, protein, fruits and veggies.
Do you know that a twinkie will keep for years in the cabinet without getting bad? We watched the movie "Super Size Me". It will definately give you a new look on the foods we eat.
I never had to watch my weight. I have no will power when it comes to food. However, once I hit my 30's, things began to change. Of course, having three children had something to do with it as well. I started to change my diet, got a personal trainer after my second son, and go to the gym at least 3-4 days a week. In three months I lost approx 25 lbs, but gained lean muscle and dropped 2 sizes. I'm due to deliver my third son the beggining of June. Although I try to spin twice a week, it's not the same. I'm so looking forward to getting back into shape. It's not the number that matters, it's the way you look and feel emotionally and physically. I'm looking forward to reading this book to find out how I can improve my diet and well being.
Good luck to all of you who have decided to begin a new diet as a result of the show!

Actually, I really DON'T know what I can eat. I get so confused after watching those shows.
I am vegetarian, so according to what I see- basically all I can eat all day long is fruits and vegetables. I am used to eating pasta and cheeses with my meal, as that is the only way to get some variation in my diet.
Also, I am a single person living on my own - and buying fresh fruits/veggies is tough, just because they never last more than a few days before going bad. I either have to shop everyday, or throw half it out. I don't know what I'm doing wrong in that respect.
Anyway, I have been watching what I eat, for around 2 months now. And have lost about 10lbs. I am, however, just counting calories. I imagine if I got rid of what the show listed as "bad" foods, I'd be getting better results. - Only, I honestly don't know what's left???

What type of vegitarian are you? Can you eat egg whites? How about protein suppliments like Whey protein shakes? You can mix soy milk in with the shake. There is also soy yougurt available. There are great meat suppliments out there - for instance black bean & veggie burgers and tofu. You could probably eat more of the stuff in your cabinets if you go to the health food store and get it. There is a Whole Foods in our neck of the woods. It's Wonderful! They have whole grain items and a plethera of prepared whole foods! For instance, I bought their brand of Triscut crackers. The ingredients on the box are wheat & salt. That's it! Of course, it will go bad quicker, but much healthier for you. They also have a peanut bar where you can make your own natural peanut butter. They carry FRESH fruit juices - my favorite is pomengranite juice! If you don't have a Whole Foods nearby, then check out your local health food store. I'm sure they will have some meal ideas for you. Good Luck!

You can still have pasta. Just make sure it's whole wheat. I swear, after you cook it and fix it up with some tomato sauce, you are not able to tell the difference. It taste just as good, if not better! The "regular", bleached pasta is not good for you at all. Most supermarkets carry these types of whole wheat products. As far as cheese, you can still have that also. Just make sure it's made with either skim milk or 2% milk and watch your portions. There are healthy substitutes for just about every food out there. I discovered sugar free Mrs. Butterworth syrup over the weekend. I put some on top of some whole wheat pancakes and I'm telling you it was simply delicious. Tastes just like the high-sugar syrup. And one serving of this syrup has only 35 calories compared to the regular stuff, which has 220 per serving!!! I just found out South Beach has a healthier chocolate chip cookie on the market. I can't wait to get my hands on that sucker! :D

Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. I don't mean to make it so hard, but I'm still new to all this trying to eat healthy. Like someone else a few posts ago, I never had to have to watch what I ate (and I ate ALL the wrong things) and always maintained a normal weight. Up until a few years ago, anyway.
I'm also a picky eater, was like that even before going veggie - that just made things harder for me. But the pasta in my cupboard, turns out, is whole grain. So I'm glad that's ok.
I buy alot of the morningstar farms veggie items, usually. I hope those are ok, too.
There's no Whole Foods by me, but there was one when I visited my sis - I loved that store; wish there was one here. I will have to look for something similar in my area.
The rough part is all the veggie products and healthy stuff is so expensive. I guess the question is how to eat healthy on a budget!
