Hi All,

My DD is 7 mos old and is just recently weaned. I am giving her similac advance which she seems to have responded to fine for the month or so I was supplementing.

However, in the past week she is constipated for the first time. I feel so bad as I can really tell that she is uncomfortable, especially at night time.

I have tried giving her prunes and also the prune apple juice but neither seem to be doing the job. She has gone a few times in the past week but her bm's are hard.

My mom suggested a bottle of water and dissolved cayro syrup every once in a while?? Any other ideas on what I can do?

Try the karo syrup... and remember, not to give stool hardening foods, like banana's or cereals, with the ones you're using to try to loosen her up...

if that doesn't work though, definately get to a doctor... there are laxatives they can prescribe...and if she ends up having chronic problems with constipation, there are bowel disorders/diseases that may need to be ruled out.

One teaspoon of sugar added to waterever she is eating. Worked really well for my son. His poop was really hard, he would strain many times a day and cry when pooping. Make sure you wait about 2 days to see results. But long term use proon jam/juice and foods that start w/ "p" (pears, potatoe, peas, etc). Don't overdo it or she'll get diarrhea.

I had a great big post in here somewhere with constipation tips. I'll have to see if I can find it. Ds has really struggled with it since we started protiens. In short they have told us the sugar trick, 1 tsp brown sugar to every oz of formula. Only to that twice a day when you have to so they don't get used to it. Lots of fruits and veggies. Bananas can cause constipation though. Apple/pear or prune juice is good. You can use up to 4 oz juice and 4 oz water to up the fluid level and fibre is huge. Try Bran Buds cereal crushed into all your solids. Good luck, I'll see if I can find the other post.
