Hi ,Im a 45 year old female , since having my last child(14) and having a spinal block during birth I have had spinal spasams, mainly in the lower back, unfortunatly ,8 weeks ago i had a bit of a car accident, went into a really bad spasam with severe pain radiating up my back ,neck and base of my head, this lasted appros 30 mins, since then these episodes are more frequent and severe (scarey) docs have given me spasmarol, but they only take the "edge" off the spasams, xrays taken from the accidnt shows am "old" back fracture (which i cannot recall doing) but have offered me nothing except spasmoral, can someonr please advise? thank you ,, helen

Helen,
I would ask for an MRI to pinpoint what's up.
I'm not sure if the spinal block could cause this. Maybe there was an underlying problem that the spinal block "triggered".

thank you denis, they say the "fracture" is ay the 6th vertabrea , but havent disclosed how, when , why , if the spinal block has caused it, not admitting liability,, but if i "fracured" my back, wouldnt i have known at the time,, and i presume in agony,as i said i do not recall an injury that would have caused this,im,present condition is , agony when walking , like im carrying a heavy weight in my lower back, take spasams even while going to the bathroom, geting into the car , etc , i would love an instant cure, but no one at the hospital seems to be intrested :o( once again , thank you for reply , helen

You'll have to ask for more information, do some internet research, and fight to get an MRI. You say it's at the 6th vertebrae - have they said it is Thoracic or Lumbar? I ask becuase the spine has 5 Lumbar vertebrae so I'm guessing it's a bit higher up at the Thoracic level.

Helen,
Seriously, the symptoms you are decribing, demand that you have an MRI to pinpoint the cause. Please make an appointment with your doctor and ask them to do an MRI.

Seconded what dennis said if for nothing else to give you comfort in this should help you very much determine the problem (getting an MRI)

Hi Helen,
Sorry to hear you are in so much pain. A fracture can indeed be present and you not know it. Happens all the time.
Your spasms and pain need to be controlled and you need to get to a reputable doctor to get you on the road to finding the cause of the pain and trying to eliminate it or reduce it so you can get some relief.
You have to stand up and be counted Only you can tell your doctors what you feel. If you arent getting the results you need, find another doctor. It took me five surgeons to get the one that helped me. I had a spinal fusion at L4-L5 just a few weeks ago. Things are coming along nicely and this doctor listens! Find one that will listen to you!
Keep us informed.
