Hi, lately I've noticed that my skin is excessively DRY!, and :D I have been really unatended to moisturizing my skin :D , I take showers with really warm water (everyday!) and I know that dries my skin, but on top of that I dont have a good lotion that would hydrate and make my skin soft and a give it a moisturized touch. I'm scared of this since my skin is literally cracking (or so it seems like it), and I'm terrified of getting strethmarks (due to dryness) which I started seeing already. I live close to cvs, rite aid, kmart, beauty supplies, so please tell me about a good lotion I can buy that WILL (not may) give me a nice long lasting moisturized feeling?

Thanx in advance to those who answer

Eucerin is a really good lotion, its recommended by dermatologists. I just started using it and can definately tell its different from most of the other lotions because it gives your skin a shine (not caused by little glitter sparkles) and it definately feels thicker (not supposed to sound bad). If you have really dry skin I would try that, it doesnt have a scent though. Nivea's enriched lotion is somewhat the same and has a scent but I think Eucerin is better as far as moisturization goes.

Have you ever tried Moisturizing Body Oil (Cocoa Butter Formula) by Palmer's? I thought that a body oil would be too oily for me, but this one is light and fast absorbing. LOVE IT!

When I take a shower I rub it into my skin while still wet and before drying off.

I am not sure who all carries it, but I have gotten it at both Ulta and Drug Emporium.

I love the Bath & Body Works body creams (in the tube). I also like Neutrogena and Curel.
Ooh one of the best is Udderly Smooth (Walgreens, Wal-Mart).

I have very dry skin and I use Curel on a daily basis. Don't get the new fragranced kinds they have, go with the original kind, it's much more moisturizing.

Go for any of those dermatologist recommended lotions.Especially those that are un-scented.Fragrances can dry out your skin and cause irritation sometimes. Also, use a good moisturizing body wash or at least one of those after washing lotions they make for in the shower.

Curel it definitely good and I've heard good things about Eurcerin too.. I want to try it! I don't recommend Jergens or Olay Quench.. they were a disappointment to me. I actually bought some Calgon cream that is vanilla swirl scented and it actually works pretty good.. it smells like the bath and body works one but works MUCH better than that one. I also really like body butters.. and I think I may try the body oil!

I have the same problem as you. I tend to take long hot shower, and when I get out my skin is so dry it flakes everywhere... especially my arms and legs.

What I find works okay for me is baby oil and lotion. I apply baby oil all over my body (except face) right after I get out of the shower when my skin is still wet. Than once that dries a little bit I apply Nivea lotion all over. I like Nivea, it smells nice and it moisturizes really well.
A combination of these two is very moisturizing, but it does take a while to dry. I usually do this a couple of times a week when I have plenty of time to relax and let it my skin air dry.

Jergens for extra dry skin...It is the BEST lotion I've ever used.

My skin is really dry, flaky and scaly, and this makes it really soft and smooth for hours!

Udderly Smooth is really good too.

I absolutely cannot stand Eucerin of any type (it is really greasy and gross in my opinion).

I'd have to agree that Nivea is a good cream for dry skin.. my skin used to not be dry and it was a little too thick for me, but if your skin is dry then it works great! It does have a scent though, but not a bad one at all.. but scented ones aren't good for sensitive skin. Maybe they make an unscented one??

I also have Jergens lotion that lets you shave less often.. I like it and it works but it just isn't moisturizing enough, so I put on other cream after that as well when I need it.

The one that always worked the best for me was Johnson's Soft Lotion. I love the smell because it's so fresh, and it really moisturizes :)

Ok well I did a little research on the Eucerin and the Nivea lotions and the reason they give a little shine to your skin and moisturize so well is because they both have mineral oil in them. Baby oil is mineral oil and fragrance. Makes sense.

I've been using the baby oil after the shower thing also, and while it "kind of" works, it wasn't giving my dry skin what it needed.

My derm said that's because mineral oil's molecules are actually too big to penetrate the skin, and merely sits on top, causing a "little" moisture to the top of the skin, but causing a great sheen !! But does little to penetrate the deep layers actually helping the dry skin !!

My derm actually said if you're going to use oil, you need to use something like neutrogena's oil ....I forgot what it's called, I have it at home, but it made with sesame oil, (I think) which actually penetrates the skin.

I've used several lotions based upon his recommendation ...Eurecin, did nothing ....Curel ...was okay, now I'm using dermabutter and my skin has never looked better !!!

I use the neutrogena oil and then use the dermabutter on top

Ok, this one is too good to pass up. I've been using Olay Quench ( for Extra Dry Skin) for almost a year since it came out, and I LOVE it! I'ts fairly cheap, smells great, is lightwieght and non-greasy, and best of all, it WORKS. After using it for a couple months it really does repair the moisture barrier of your skin. It makes it sooooo soft, smooth, and it moisturizes SO well. You HAVE to try it. :D

Try Pretty Feet and Hands Lotion. You will literally be rubbing the dry skin right off. In the winter I have extremely dry and calloused heels and this lotion is working wonders.

I once read that "lotions" actually don't help much..or even dry skin more...

You need a CREAM... Eucerin and Curel are great... the Palmers Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter creams are great too

Another trick though, is keeping some body oil in the shower... Vaseline makes some, Neutrogena makes some... or even baby oil... and after your shower, while you're still wet, rub it in. Your pores are open and absorb the best after the steam/warmth from the shower. I'd been doing this for years, but my teen son's doctor recommended the same thing for his dry skin.

i definitely agree with the last posts that lotions are the cureall for your dry skin.

when you shower, you've got to remember to use a super gentle cleanser that won't dry out your skin or clog your pores. i'd recommend sebamed's shower oil (think it's $12-13) cause it with hydrate your skin without leaving a greasy residue. it's completely soap free and contains avocado oil and lecithin. i read in their website that all their products match the pH value of healthy skin.

when you get out of the shower, remember to moisturize right after a light towel dry. sebamed carries a body lotion that won't leave your skin feeling greasy but will moisturize.

hope this is helpful for you!

I'm also looking for another good moisturizer, a thick one that relieves eczema. As with this thread, searching through other threads has not revealed a consensus on this forum. I was leaning toward Johnson's softlotion, but there are no fragrance-free versions. Then, I thought about Lubriderm but I read that it is a very light lotion. A week-long trial of Aveeno Daily Moisturizer made my skin worse. So, I guess the best approach is simply to try them all out and discover what works for you.

To make your choice harder, I have been using Moisturel for many years and it's really good. Only recently have I thought about trying something else, in hopes that there may be something better. Moisturel is also rather expensive; it's up there with Eucerin.

I use prescription Elidel, it comes in a tube and works pretty well. If you're using it all over your body you might run out of it quickly, but I like it a lot.

Olay ribbons body wash is great. The one with body butter is really moisturizing. If you don't like to put lotion on all over then try this.

Corn huskers lotion. You can probably get it anywhere and its very cheap. I found it by accident because my husband had a severe itch from healing from a sunburn and the pharmacist said corn huskers lotion which Ive never heard of before but when I was putting it on him I noticed how nice it felt and easy to apply (not thick). It is meant for really dry, rough, cracked skin hence the name but I just used it on my legs and they feel soft! And its not greasy, water and glycerin are the main ingredients.

Gold Bond Ultimate Healing lotion is the best body lotion I've ever used! Also, a humidifier in your bedroom at night helps a lot. I have dry sensitive skin and now I wash my face and don't have dry peeling cracking facial skin.

I use olive oil after I shower and then moisturize with a mixture of Sauve Oatmeal lotion and olive oil.

I have very dry skin and have been using the olive oil for about five years with various lotions. My former favorite lotionwas St. Ives Collagen, tried the Sauve Oatmeal when I couldn't find the St. Ives and liked it better. I get frequently get compliments on my smooth skin.

AmLactin is a product derms will prescribe for excessively dry skin. It is available at Costco if insurance won't cover it.
