Hello. I'm new and hoping someone can help.
I am a 42 year old male and recently was told by my doctor that I might be having problems with glucose. I had fasting glucose and insulin tests ran the other day, the results were-- glucose base 93, 1 hour 172, 2 hours 104, insulin was 6.

my doctor won't be available for a week and I'm wanting some answers.
My sons girlfriend thinks this sounds like borderline type 1. Is this something to think about or do these results sound normal.

A glucose profile like what you describe--starting normal, spiking up to 172 after one hour, then returning to normal after 2 hours--is NOT a response that a type 1 diabetic would have. There is no such a thing as a "borderline" type 1. Type 1's generally go up and continue to do so because insulin production has come to almost a total halt. This does, however, sound like a typical type 2 response curve--someone with some degree of insulin resistance. The 172 is WELL above the 1 hr. reading for a non-diabetic, and is fairly conclusive evidence of diabetes. The "borderline" label merely means that your post-prandial spike returns to normal fairly quickly and with no treatment necessary. However, your glucose levels are likely going high at other times and for other reasons (such as the 'dawn phenomena'), and you should not allow a doctor to decide that you don't need to treat it or follow it up. Be aggressive and demand early diagnosis and tight control--even if only through diet and exercise. Such early intervention will help assure that you avoid the devestating complications of uncontrolled diabetes later on, such as blindness, kidney failure and limb amputations (diabetes is the leading cause of each one!)
