I am the type of person who likes to have a schedule to follow, you know - everything all laid out (with a little room for modification) but at least a clear picture of what to do next. Well without a major female family figure to turn to, I always turn to you ladies and everybody is great at giving advice. SO here goes, I need advice from moms already feeding solids, how did you do it in the begining? How much for how long? how many feedings per day? (BTW DS is 6 months and I pump at work so Grandpa is feeding him during the day)

We have started last week with two feedings of rice cereal (mixed with breastmilk) during the day and the rest formula feedings or breast (morning and evenings).

This weekend we gave him 1 feeding with 2 tablespoons of green beans which he ate right up.

Once we get thru a couple of days of green beans we are moving on to sweet potatoes.

Do we continue just one veggie feeding - 2 tablespoons a day? and the other rice?

When do we increase the number of feedings per day?

and any other information you feel might be helpful.

Thanks in advance...

Well, according to what my ped told me you're doing things just how you're supposed to. He said to start with rice cereal and the introduce colored veggies (carrots, sweet potato, etc) Then you move to green veggies (green beans, sweet peas) and then finally fruits. With the veggies I'm not real sure why colored before green???? I used to just get 1/2 the jar of 1st foods and whatever she didn't eat just throw away. They'll let you know when they're full. Also only introduce one new food every 3-4 days. That way if they break out in a rash or have some kind of allergic reaction you'll know what caused it. My dd is 7 mos and has been eating solids for a couple of months now and she eats about a jar of 2nd foods for lunch usually cereal with pears or bananas and then for dinner 1/2 jar of a meat and veggie dinner and 1/2 jar of fruit. She still takes about 4-5 bottles a day sometimes less and at least one juice bottle. The whole feeding schedule really depends on the baby, solids 2 times a day keeps her happy because she enjoys her bottle first thing in the morning. Hope this helps!! :D

in response to maxx and the greens question i read somewhere that greens including broccoli and beans can cause exccess gas and thus tummy pains so when left till later in weaning babys little digestive system is better developed and can process them better.

You're doing great with the feeding. The only other thing I can suggest is don't kill yourself trying to keep track of times and quantities of food. I did that with my first baby, so I understand, but after having a few more kids, I realized it doesn't overly matter.

I alway did rice cereal in the mornings, as much as the little piggy would eat. Followed by a bottle and another bottle before nap. Lunch was a jar of whatever veggie, again as much as they would eat. Dinner another jar of veggie. I introduced a new food every other day. Also, you can keep whatever they don't eat out of a jar and feed it the next time. You can also just dump out half of it in to a bowl to feed and save the other half in the fridge for the next feeding. I'm a waste not, want not Mom.
