Aloha, I am new to this message board. For Christmas I found out I have type ll diabetes. Of course mt Dr. discovered this without fasting or glucous tolerence tests. Then perscribed me Metformin 500mg. At first I would experience hypoglycemia symptoms in 15 minutes. Now twoweeks and 20 added lbs later it takes me 1 - 2 hours to get those symptoms. Is this normal? As I understnd it Metformin is not supposed to do this. It is my understand that the weight gain also is unusual. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
It is pretty unusual to gain weight with metformin, Usually supposed to help you lose it. My mum is diabetic and she was prescribed metformin to try and help her to lose weight.
I would go back to your doctor and ask him to review your medication

I was diagnosed in June of this year (Type II) my doc put me on Metromorfin as well. You're correct, it isn't supposed to lower your levels that way and you certainly shouldn't do the hypoglycemic thing at all. This drug isn't like insulin at all. Also, I've lost 35 pounds since being diagnosed. The pharmacist told me that the medication would take some weight off. The rest of it is a radical change in diet and exercise routine. I'd be talking with my doc about both of these concerns you raise. Good luck!
