View Full Version : My 10mth old has high platelets and ESR rate

I just came across this board last night and thought I would post, my 10mth old has not been herself since she had the rotavirus earlier this year, about a month ago bruises started appearing on her back (mainly along her spine) well I me and my dh dismissed it as she was getting active and maybe fell on a toy wrong or something until 2 more appeared in teh same spot.

I notifyed her doc and he said it wasnt a normal spot so he wanted to do some blood work, well he called me within hours of doing her blood work, her platelets are over one million and her sed rate is 64 which for a 10 mth old female should be under about 9 or 10 (and thats the high range).

She is having a bone scan done this friday to look for a few things, a bone infection, diskitis, a tumor or malig.

Anyway I am still trying to find out all I can about any type of possibilities with these elevations and what might be going on.

she was such a cheerful baby until 7 mths and is cranky alot, sleeps alot and I have a hard time getting her to eat and I hate this waiting game for tests!

Just looking for some friendly faces, opinions, etc ...

Thanks

Hi Hannahsmom

The ESr rate is the indication of inflammation in a persons body. If this is raised then there is obvious inflammation somewhere in the body. This could be due to anything simple or soemthing more serious, but you have done the right thing with the doctor visit and from the looks of it your doctor is taking the right direction by getting a bone scan done as well.

There are lots of reasons as to why people, including children develop high ESR levels, unfortunately the list can be endless.

There is a wesite called labtests online, if you type it in on goggle it sohuld bring it up and there is asection where you can type in what tests your daughter is having and it gives results such as......why? disease or illness possibilities.

I hope this helps and please keep me updated on your daughter.

so very sorry to hear about what you and you daughter are having to go thru.I know what its like to have a 'scarey child" believe me.

What other labs did they do besides the ones you mentioned here?did they check her kidney and liver functions? There are certain types of kidney/liver issues that can affect alot of other bodysystem functions as certain changes take place while they are becomming more damaged.this is what happened to me son.he had actually been going into liver failure even before he was born.we just had no clue at all til one day while at school,he just started vomiting up blood.quite the eye opener there.but the thing is,he was having some really spaced out,not constant or happening all at the same time types of symptoms that would tell you'hey this kid is sick",ya know/he was also bruiseing in really odd places like along the stomach beltline area and one in an odd place on his back?they were also just really ugly looking bruises.of course, being only twelve,he didn't mention it and really was at the age where you don't really want to be showing 'mom' your body parts.here at the time of Dx at age 12,he was in liver failure and down to only having about 20% of actual liver function left, and we hadn't even realized he was even sick! talk about the overwhelming 'im a really bad mom' type of feelings, wow.

I would really highly reccomend to you that you get your own set of copies of ALL tests and medical places she will be or has been treated at.you really DO need to gather up all of the medical records from all the treating docs and copies of every single little test she has done and then keep the most current tests and info in a little expanding type of file?believe me,this comes in sooo handy for many many reasons.if you are going to be referred to any other specialists or any other places for consults or treatments, you need to always have this file taken along with you as you will be asked some really stupid questions about certain medical aspects of your child that you just cannot possibly remeber,if you have this folder, all you have to do is reach into it and grab the info out that this doc is asking about.honestly, this file went everywhere with us.anytime there may be a reason for her to haveto go to an ER or something, all you have to do is grab that file and go,and it will contain all of the latest stuff that was done, including the most recent copies of any lab work that may have been done.this is crucial info for the ER docs as it gives them a baseline to work from.you know what I mean?they will know, just by looking at her last set of labs whether a specific lab has gone up or down or stayed the same since the like two weeks ago when it had been done.this also saves a ton of time(which in itself can be a true lifesaver in some cases)and you will not have to sit there and try and remeber every little detail about some specific thing and can spend much more time just being there for your daughter.

all you have to do is call all the places ahe has been seen for anything and ask for a release of information to be sent out.you just fill it out, sign it and send it back and then the records will be sitting in your mailbox within about a few days to about a weeks time.then evry few months(depending on how many visits she has had)just call them up and tell them you need the latest set of her records to be sent out.the release is actually good for a year and then you just resign a new one.

also, after any labs are done, either at the docs offices or espescially an ER,ask for the copys of labs immediately so you can take them with you have will have these in your possession at all times.any place where these are done can run a copy off.the ER can do it for you before you leave, but with most docs offices it will take a few days as the labs have to be sent out to somewhere to all be done, with the exception of a few that can be done right in the office.but the labs are really really important to always have immeditely done and obtained or as soon as they can do it.

believe me,doing this for my son really really saved me a ton of hassle and problems.and I always knew that his treating docs,no matter if it was a new specialist or the ER had the most up to date info on my son.

also when someone at your docs office tells you that they are actuallygoing to fax or send some important info onto some new doc that she may be seeing?do not count on it,sometimes for whatever reason, this never gets done so you show up at this appt that in most cases you have waited like a month for, only to have it kind of wasted because that promised info was never passed on.THIS is when your own info in that folder you brought with you comes in really really handy.allyou have to do is go into your own records and pull out that important info and tell them they can make a copy of your copy.but make sure you get that document back.never ever surrender your own copies of anything, always tell them to make their own and give it back.it can just be kind of a hassle to replce that one document should it get misplaced.

I know I am rambling on here but you really DO need to do this when you have a child or for yourself as well,if there is a chronic ongoing condition going on,really.this truely is the best way to try and stay on top of everything that will be comming your way.

I certainly am hoping that things are not too bad and whatever she has can be treated without any major medical intervention.Just hang in there and take it one day at a time and don't sweat the small stuff. If you have any questions or need to vent, let me know,K?please keep us posted on just what you find out,K?

I have been wondering about this. My daughter who is 2 1/2 yrs old has lately been getting 2 small bruises on her spinal cord near the bottom of her back. She is also a borderline anemic but I know it is not normal for them to really bruise above the knees unless they fell or something. They have appeared a few times and in the same spot. I havn't mentioned it to the dr.
Any clues for her.
Thanks

to add. She had a cbc done last month. I don't know if it would show anything contributing to the bruises in that. I think those are different tests all together.Maybe?
