Hi i wonder if anyone out there can help me. I feel as though my body has gone haywire. Last september i had a bad pain in my left side when i had my period, that month my period lasted for a week and a half. I went to the doctor and she gave me an internal and sent me for an ultrasound scan just before christmas. The scan results came back clear. I do not have excess body hair but i cannot lose weight no matter how hard i try i also do not have a big appetite either and even my friends have commented on this. I excercise three times a week as well. I went to weightwatchers and i stuck to the diet rigidly whwn i went to get weighed the first week i had put on half a pound and the next week a put on another half a pound. I went to the doctors and he put me on water tablets and the following week i only lost one and a half pounds despite running to the loo over and over again the following week i lost one pound which still isnt that much despite still running to the loo. Last week i put on a pound and this week i have put on another pound so now i am not taking the water tablets. I do not have excess body hair though. Last year as well i had all the symptoms of the menopause sweating and flushing as well and really hot at night in bed. The doctor tested me for the change and the hormone levels came back clear he said my body had had a blip well i wish it would blip back again as i hate it at the moment. Do internal scans pick up things that ultrasound scans dont? Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks

Hi kim,
I am a person with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). My ultrasound came back clear, but I did have an internal ultrasound done and it determined the cysts. But inorder to tell if you have the syndrome is through blood work and internal exams. As for hot flashes, almost all women go through these at least once in their lives. For PCOS symptoms, not everyone has the traditional symptoms. I have had PCOS since I was (first detected) 18. my first period was at the age 8 and then a few years later. My periods are extremely painful and can last from 12 days to 3 months and are usually extremely heavy. If your periods are irregular and you find that the pill doesn't work, then try enducing your period with provera (every 3 months). I would recommend seeing a reproductive gyno or an endocrinologist. They seem to know more about this subject. Try taking 800mg ibuprophen 3 times daily during your pain, but do not exceed that dosage in a 24 hour period. I'm not a doctor, but I have had a lot of experience with this and it's complications. As for weight, if you do have PCOS then it can be very hard to lose weight. I have tried many plans and they did not work. One plan that has worked for me is "the 3 hour diet" by jorge cruise. But if your serious about the weight loss than you need to follow his plan to the tee and you should notice results within you first 2 weeks. Exercise to what he states and not less nor more than that and it should work. Good luck, popples.

Hi Poggle
Went to the doctor today and as soon as i sat in the chair i burst into tears. I told him my symptoms and he couldnt say if it was PCOS or not. I have to go back on Wednesday morning for blood tests to check for a PCOS blood test hormone test thyroid test and blood sugar test. It will take about a fortnight for the results then we'll take it from there. I'll keep you posted.

Hi everyone, I was dx with PCOS at 20.
I have managed to keep it under control by exerciseing and avoiding gluten!
You should all try it, i was at 175lbs now am 136..
no more ovary pain and its been 2 years!!!!!
so screw the ultrasound and the pills and the doctors, PCOS can be cured with diet and exercise.... you just have to know what to eat.
let me know if you want to know more, id love to help.
I had PCOS bad too..
Also antidepresants SSRI's like paxil and prozac are bad for PCOSers soon as i got off my prozac I lost 10 lbs and started to feel better!!!!

Hi Christine
Thanks for replying to me. I excersise three times a week 2 bums and tums and a cardiovascular gym session, no weights as i have back problems. If you dont mind i would love to know about your diet and what you eat. I went to weight watchers and the first two weeks i put on half a pound each time. I went to the doc and he gave me water tablets and even though i was running to the loo, i only lost a pound then a pound and a half and that was in 5 weeks. Everyone says they see a difference in me and my clothes do feel looser but the scales say im putting on weight, how weird is that. I have stopped the water pills now as obviously they were doing no good.I know there has got to be some reason for this and i just want to get to the bottom of it once and for all so lets hope the blood tests come back with something.

Not that I'm an expert and far from it but if your clothes are fitting looser and people are telling you you look thinner. Then sweetie maybe you are. You could be developing muscles and those weigh more than fat. My sister went from a size 18 to a 14 and she only lost about 15 lbs, but she definitely toned her body and that's where the weight went. It turned into muscles. So maybe that's also happening with you.

Eat low carb higher protein, lots of salads.
Stay away from bread, pasta, pretzels fruit juice, simple sugars etc. These foods cause you pancreas to release insulin, much faster and will make you crash like a diabetic.
Eat, vegiatbles, whole fruits with meals, lean turkey, chicken, lean beef, fish,
grains, brown rice, oatmeal, no bread!!!!!! and other complex carbs, nuts and cheese in moderation.
basically I just drink water, or tea with a spash of milk and sugar and avoid alcohol, and I dont drink soy, its estrogenic and makes me feel fat.
Avoid artifical sugars and sweetners and diet products because they contain phenealinine, (sp?) and its an amino acid that is can cause depression and also cause you to crave sugar even more. Also splenda is a chemical and I like to eat natural. I dont trust chemical sweetners.
Go buy an oxygen magazine, the womans bodybuilding mag, and read about their cooking recepies are simple and clean, high protein and low carb, but I wouldnt take in protein shakes or supplements or bars and garbage like that. Its the bars and cookies and packaged junk that sabatoges PCOS people more than anything.
When grocery shopping ---Stay away from the bread isle, and snack isle. And shop mostly around the perimeters of the grocery store, and the frozen food section for plain frozen vegitables. You can go into the isles for some condiments, and soups, etc, but you dont really need much there.
I would supplement with a B12 complex or multivitamin like centrium a basic one not a mega crazy one.
1. principal for the perfect diet
Stay close to nature.

If you are gaining weight rapidly despite a good diet and exercise, the metabolism could be mostly definately faulty.
Some women in rare cases can have Tumors in the putitary gland, causing cushings syndrome, a fat back, bloated abdomen, moon face, or fat face with a rash, and a general feeling of garbage, due to excess cortisol levels.
Other things such as ovarian cancer or tumors and such can effect hormones like estrogen etc. and also spread to the brain, and cause rapid weight gain, despite a persons best efforts.
In these cases an ednocrinologist or family dr. can test for hormones and cortisol, etc, and so MRI's in the brain to see if there are tumors, and sonograms on ovarys and etc to check for tumors there.
This is just in some people, I am not sure of your problem.
