View Full Version : balancing sugars with proteins

I have hypoglycemia and I have to follow a certain diet like most everyone at this board does. Anyway, I went to the doctor and she told me that I don't have to lower my sugars all that much. She said that I can have something such as a Coke, but then I need to eat some peanut butter or anything containing protein to balance it out. She has never mentioned this "balancing diet" before. The first time this diet was brought up, I had to eat high protein and very low sugar or none at all. I'm really excited about starting the newer diet. I get to have some normal foods now! But, I was wondering if this is alright to do? She is kind of confusing at times and I wanted to make sure what I'm doing is okay. I'm glad I got off that diet because it was causing me to lose weight. Right now I'm 5'8" and 121. Nothing to worry about, but just thought I would add in the weight loss. Anyway, does the balancing sugars with proteins sound okay?

Do you check your bg's with a machine? The best thing to do is to try what she said and then check what happens to your bg. You might check it ever 15 or 30 minutes after you eat/drink like that, until it peaks and then comes down and levels out. For a diabetic, that would not be a good combination, as the Coke has way too much sugar. If you are not diabetic, it might be a different story, though.
