DD is 3 months old and used to go about 3 hours between feedings. Now here recently she started going 5 hours between some of her feedings. Is this OK? When she does this I try to feed her and she doesn't want to eat until the 5 hour mark. Sometimes, I'll just wait until she acts hugary/gets fussy and notice that that much time has passed since she ate last. This does not happen between every feeding, but its getting more frequent. Now, I'm only talk about during the day, at night she sleeps pretty well, about 6-7hours, one time even 9 hours. Is it ok for her to go this long during the day?

depends on how much she is eating at each feeding, if she is growing fine and acting fine, then she is probably fine, I would not worry about it, unless she is losing weight and not thriving as well. good luck

My ds NORMALLY goes bettween 4.5 and 5 hours between feedings too. I guess he just eats alot cause he is one BIG boy. Since he is so big I don't worry about it. I say normally cause just recently he wants to eat more often, acts almost as if he is teething and just wants the comfort. He is 4 months but started going about 5 hours between nursing at around 3 months I think. He doesn't wake to eat at night either, unless of course wants the comfort, when I think his teeth or something is bugging him. Hope that helps!

My Pediatrition told us not to let our son go longer than 5 hours without eating. She said that he needs the fluids so he does not get dehydrated since he is only having breastmilk...no water or anything. He normally eats every 3 hours during the day and I will let him go for the full 5 at night. I will wake him if he does not wake himself.

hi feb
my ds started going longer and taking less ounces my health visitor says that is because now he is over 12 pounds his body has had growth spurts and it will all slow down now he is doing 5 ounces every 3/4 hours but can go up to 5/6 hours in the night. so it sounds fine to me oh aand ds is 9 weeks :)

OMG I can't imagine. My DS eats constantly. Sometimes every hour ~ two at most. Maybe 4 at night. I would love one day in your shoes. (as long as it is ok for your baby). I would say if he is still gaining weight than it is okay).

Thanks for the responce ladies. DD is probably 16 lbs, she's a big girl. I'm sure she's started this b/c she getting bigger. Glad to know it's ok!

It is known that once a baby hits about 16 pounds that their bodies are able to go longer and even sleep through the night. I've never heard that a baby should be waken after 5 hours at most when the baby is at 3 months or at 16 pounds. I understand this theory when they are smaller and younger but their bodies adjust and are able to sustain themselves longer. This is just my opinion based on my first son. He was sleeping for 5 to 6 hours at night around 6 weeks old and waking for a feed and then going back to sleep for 3 more hours. He was sleeping straight through the night at 3 months old - from 11pm to 9am. He is a happy, healthy boy who loves his sleep!! :D
