IL0VEMYKIDS 05-11-2006, 01:17 PM My baby was born with a problem in his neck. I needed to have an emergency c section and he was so stuck in there that they had to PULL him out. Well they pulled so hard to get him out that they tore mussel in his neck that grew back as scar tissue and not mussel. There is a name for this problem, but I forgot, I think its like tort.... (something). His head is ALWAYS leaning to one side. We were told to do streches, but it hasnet yet worked.
Does anyone know anything about this or have any further information?
2fast4u 05-11-2006, 04:30 PM Try a chiropractor. My neighbor's daughter always held her neck to one side as a baby and they got a chiropractor to come to the house and massage it and stuff. She is fine now.
Border3899 05-11-2006, 08:12 PM My guess is he has Torticollis.....my son was also born with this and we had to do stretches three times a day and he had to go in for PT once a week. After three weeks of PT we were able to cut down to every other week and after two times of that we're now able to cut down to once a month for PT but still do the stretches at home three times a day. The stretches have done wonders for my son who is now 5 months old, he doesnt tilt anymore and with the PT and stretches he has been reaching developmental milestones earlier than most babies.
We started our son with just the chiropractor but then our doctor recommended PT and i'm glad we opted to go with PT because it's been great for our son.....of course most of it is what we do at home. If you dont do the stretches at home it's not going to get better.
IL0VEMYKIDS 05-11-2006, 08:40 PM YES!!! THATS THE NAME OF IT!!! thanks!!! We do streches with his neck to the opposite side every day(10seconds, right??). he still tilts a lot!!! So no Chiro :nono: ??? And children with this conditopn develope slower??? I really know NOTHING about this. All the ped said was strech, thats it!!
baby#2 05-11-2006, 10:24 PM My first son was also born with this and now at 22 months he is perfectly fine. At 4 months we took him to the Ped because it wasn't getting better. We had to prop him on his side so his head wouldn't always rest on the same spot. He does have a little flat spot still but his neck is perfectly fine and there are no signs that there was ever anything wrong. We did the stretches too but no PT. Don't worry about it. If he starts getting a flat spot talk to your Ped and see what they recommend. We had to roll a big fat towel up and tuck it under his right side so his head wouldn't flop to the right.
IL0VEMYKIDS 05-11-2006, 10:31 PM He does not have a flat spot, but his head is kinda flat on onw side and bulged on the side he leans on. this is in the bock toward the side. Is that OK
baby#2 05-11-2006, 10:42 PM Babies heads are very soft still and moldable so it's probably not anything to worry about but if I were you I'd be taking him to the Doc just to make sure! I'm sure all's good but when there are neck injuries involved I don't think one can be too careful or concerned.
Beyondthesky37 05-11-2006, 11:12 PM My DS had this. My husband and I didn't even realize it until we took him to his peditrician for a checkup and she could tell right away he had bad torticollis. We took him to the chiropractor and we didn't even have to do any of the PT or strethces. He's now completely normal with no lasting side effects. The chiropractor had him better in a few weeks. The peditrician was pretty happy with the results. His head was also flat on one side but it's corrected itself now.
IL0VEMYKIDS 05-12-2006, 03:12 AM I was kinda scared he may have to wear a baby helmet or soemthing. He has an apointment tomorrow, so I will know more. Thanks all!
Border3899 05-12-2006, 11:42 AM I will tell you that most babies do not have to wear the helmet....if you do the stretches three times a day repeating each one two or three times and yes hold for 10 seconds they should work and you shouldnt need the helmet. It will take time you wont notice improvement right away. And yes generally babies with this will develop slower, but with my son going to PT and the stretches we've done he is actually developing faster than most babies.
When we went to PT they gave us a sheet with different way's to hold DS which would also be stretching the muscle....for example if he tilts to the right when feeding them hold them in your left arm. Also our PT couldnt stress tummy time enough so we do a lot of tummy time...DS started out hating that but has gotten better. [ REMOVED ]
dizzygirl 05-12-2006, 02:23 PM I don't have time to post right now, but my son had it too, if you do a search on this board for torticollis, you'll find all of my posts, I promise to check back in a few days............bottom line, he's fine! Just a few months of PT!
IL0VEMYKIDS 05-12-2006, 08:56 PM wow!! ya that would be great!! that stinks!
roxyfoxy 05-13-2006, 10:28 PM Wow, I'm sure glad I read this thread. My SIL had an emergency c-section 3wks early when her water broke. Long story short they had to pull her out because she was stuck too. We have all noticed that her head is always tilted to the right side, but they just think her neck isn't strong enough. I never heard of this condition but when I see her I will let her know. I always thought it was because they didn't properly support her head. When she falls asleep in her car seat, her head is always resting by her shoulder without a blanket rolled up keeping it straight. I figured that was why her head was tilted all of the time.
