I had a bunionectomy on April 7th and it was healing fine as far as I knew. I had the pins and stitches taken out on Wednesday. It's Sunday and the bottom of my big toe is numb, I can't feel anything and when I put my foot down, my big toe still stays in the air. Now my mom says that's supposed to happen but when I went to my doctor, he was yelling at me to put it down and I couldn't. Can anyone here tell me if that's supposed to happen? I'm getting a little worried. Thanks!

I can't comment on the angulation of the toe, but the numbness is totally normal. The incision cuts through the small nerves running through the skin. Also, swelling can compress nerves and cause temporary damage. The feeling will come back (slowly) in a couple of months or so. You may always have numbness of the incision and the area right around it, but the rest of the feeling should come back at some point.

Numbness is normal, and should eventually dissipate. Wiggle, raise and lower the toes you can control, several times daily. The ones that refuse to listen to your mind, move gently with your fingers. Muscles, unused, will waste, and eventually contract in unhealthy positions, and cause more problems in your pt. I wish your OS hadn't yelled at you, they don't seem to have the patience or the sensitivity sometimes to explain things to us, but the idea is to keep them moving. Kim

Thanks everyone! I wouldn't have known numbness was normal. I'll move it around as much as possible. Thanks again! :)
