I am a 39yr Type 2 Diabetic. I was diagnosed in 1996. In the past (1996 - 1999) I only had to take the pill.. glyburide and glocophage. Now Insulin (novalin 70/30) 50 units twice a day. Prior to this I only had to use 50 units once a day with 45mg of Actos. I gained 10 pounds and retained fluid so my doctor prescribed Latex 40mg but the swelling did not disappear so I stopped taking the Actos and Latex. Last week my doctor ran some test and found that I now need Altace and wants to try Avandia now after my sugar was 332 and +1 protein in my urine. My H1c went down from 13 to 10. I have read alot about Actos and Avandia but decided to try the Actos...with the smptoms I had I stopped. Now I have read alot of negative things about Avandia what does one do? Help it says Avandia should not be used with insulin therapy?? My primary care physican is treating my diabetes so far...should I see a specialist?

try to find a local diabetes nurse or diabetes educator or perhaps see a diabetes specialist doctor, some GP's dont treat diabetes all that well

I would definitely see a specialist, either an endocrinologist or a diabetologist. You a1c, while improved, is still way too high. High blood glucose, if not controlled, will cause all kinds of complications. However, if you get it under control, you can live a long and normal life.

Most general internists are not that adept at managing diabetes. It is a complicated disease, and with all of the medications and insulins on the market now, it would be far better if you were treated by a specialist.
