New old guy here. Diabetic hard core, type 1 brittle since 1959 and still kicking. Does anyone have experience with heat and insulin use? I know heat gives me problems but never like this. Since temps here have been getting into the 80's my insulin seems have almost stopped working. I'm getting about 1/10th the normal bg drop. I have changed my infusion, my insulin(new bottle)and have even tried the old needle. I am currently using four times my normal daily. Besides "see your doctor" does anyone have any ideas?

Are you talking about a bottle of insulin that you've been using for a while, or a fresh bottle? Hard to tell without that info what's going on.
As a long-time Type 1, you've probably got waaayy more experience than I do, but a couple of thoughts occurred to me:
1. Are you getting your insulin via mail-order pharmacy? Sometimes their shipping parameters aren't all that great.
2. It sounds like you're on the pump. Perhaps you may need to use less in the reservoir and change it more often?
3. Do you keep the unused bottle in the fridge? If it's really hot, that may help the unused insulin stay fresher.
4. Do you work outside? The pump reservoir may indeed be overheating if you work outside. Again, perhaps changing more frequently might help?
5. If the insulin seems to be failing as soon as you start using it, ask the pharmacy to replace it, as possibly they got a bad batch or they didn't store it correctly.

This is a new bottle, same problem with the last one. Always kept in fridge (even when picked up from the pharmacy) I changed my reservoir when this started happening along with my infusion. On the pump. No new meds. Have stopped eating since yesterday but the day before my bg's were low enough to make my liver kick out it's insulin inhibitor but i caught it in time to prevent it and it usually only lasts for 6 hours. FYI, low bg for me is under 35... to many lows and have developed a tolerance. anything?

Okay, finally my bg is down to 114. Not sure just why but i'm glad. I had taken enough insulin today to bring me down to -780 (lower than i have ever been). SamQkitty, thank you for your input. I had a bite of dinner http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif
