You have a great site here! I am so thrilled I found it. Could someone please try to help me understand something?

My 2 y.o. son I thought may be diabetic. He eats non-stop to the point he throws up. He drinks at least 50 -60 oz of liquid per day. He sweats for no reason at all. He is very moody and can change his tune in a heart beat. So I brought him to the ped to get checked. This was not my normal dr. for him as she was on vacation this week. Anyway, he checked him over and sent him for a blood draw. He had his finger pricked and got a reading from that. He did not fast prior to the appointment and was given nothing to drink before hand. His reading came back at 100. Now this is where I get confused. My son drinks rice milk ( he is allergic to cows milk) he had 16 oz within an hour of the blood test. Rice milk is high in carbs (22 grams per serving) and sugars are 11 grams per serving. So he had 44 carbs and 22 grams of sugar within 1 hour of the test. My question is wouldn't this HIGHER his reading? Now I am thinking more along the lines of hypoglycemic. When he starts sweating I give him juice and he seems to get better in a few minutes of finishing it. If anyone has any input please share it with me. I am not a mother who is just overreacting or imagining something he is my 6th child and I don't worry easily. Thanks for any input you may have for me. I just know 'soemtihng is not right'

Well, you're probably right that he's not diabetic, with a reading of 100 after all those carbs. However, hypoglycemia may indeed be the problem. Or perhaps something else.

My suggestion would be to keep a daily log for about a week of his food/liquid intake and his mood swings/sweatiness, etc. Then make an appointment with your regular pediatrician. After 6 children, your ped. should know you well enough to know that, if you're concerned, there may be something wrong.

Joeysmom, I'm not going to be much help because the blood sugar readings are calculated differently in my country, so I don't understand the U.S. system. However, I think you are right to be concerned about your son, and perhaps a visit to your regular pediatrician will help shed some light. Your little boy's recovery from symptoms after drinking juice seems significant to me. Perhaps they could take readings over a few hours and get a clearer picture of what's happening. You are not overreacting at all. Good luck. Mariele.
