View Full Version : I am very scared

Hello everyone.

This is my first time on these message boards, I found the link while doing some research on diabetes.

I am 21 yrs old and have had very bad anxiety lately. It got to the point that I finally took myself to the Dr. While there the Dr. drew blood to check for a thyroid problem since the symptoms are similar to anxiety.

I got a call on Thursday saying that the test was fine, except for my blood sugar, which was very high. They said it was 150.

Now, my grandfather has diabetes. My brother was diagnosed when he was very young but has never had troubles and we are convinced he was misdiagnosed. He hasn't used insulin or anything in years.

I am scared because I just don't know what the 150 level means. Is it possible that perhaps I don't have diabetes? How high is 150?

I had no eaten before the blood test, I had drank a cup of sweetened tea and I had eaten a few pringles, but that was it.

I have done some reading trying to find reasons for high blood sugar, other than diabetes. I found that not eating well or exercising could be reason. I have actually lost 10lbs because of my anxiety and I only weigh 135 normally, so I don't have 10lbs to lose. I've also been under a lot of stress related to my anxiety. The anxiety has also kept me from going out and exercising.

What do you think my chances are?

Hello BigBo... Based on the circumstances I wouldn't be too concerning about a 150 bg(blood glucose) reading. The sweetened tea and pringles probably gave you a good dose of carbs. Reliable tests can be done, if you, and your doctor, are truely concerned about a diabetes problem.

You said your bloodwork concerning a thyroid problem came back normal. What were the results? What was your TSH, your T4, and T3? If you don't know, then call your doctor and ask for a printout of the results. It's a simple thing for them. They can leave a printout at the front desk and you can pick it up. Or maybe ask them to fax it to you. Anyway, when you mention anxiety, if your thyroid was at fault you would be talking about HYPERthyroidism, possibly Graves Disease. Many years ago, many women were put thought to be insane, but they were only suffering from Graves.

Enough for now, I'm typing more than I had planned. Let us know your results on the Thyroid and keep working your doctor to chase down any possible problem. I'm sure there are many other causes of anxiety. God Bless. Woodrunner.

Thank you so much.

I actually have no idea what the results of my thyroid test were. The Dr's office has a practice of not calling you with test results unless something is wrong. Personally, I disagree with that practice but that is how they do it. So when they called, they only mentioned my blood sugar levels and nothing else.

I am going in for a Glucose Tolerance Test. I have no idea when, I have to call tomorrow to make an appt. I also have no idea if I will do the 1 hour or 3 hour test. Personally, I hope it is only the 1 hour test as that wont cause me so much anxiety. I pass out sometimes when blood is drawn so I'd prefer to only have blood drawn 1-2 times instead of 3-4.
