View Full Version : I'm new here & I have questions

Hi everyone. My father and his sister both had diabetes later in life. My ex-physician told me I should lose weight (about 40 lbs.) or that I very likely would get it, too. She gave me a fasting test and it was normal. But the thing is, right now I am getting very dizzy and lightheaded about 2 hours after breakfast, and shaky and nauseated. Lunch usually makes it better, but often I am very sleepy all afternoon.

I started reading Dr. Atkins' book about the low-carb diet and found that other blood glucose tests should be done too, not just the fasting ones. He talks about pre-diabetes. Does that mean that a fasting test might be normal, but your level would go way too high right after eating something?

Unfortunately, we've moved and we're having problems with our new health plan and I have not been able to get to a new doctor to ask these questions. I just thought maybe someone here could tell me, just because I have a normal fasting level, could I still be at risk for diabetes? I did buy a home kit and about 2 hours after I ate, my level was 158.

if you are testing your own bloodsugar this will give you the answer, otherwise a glucose tollerance test is probably what you need

agree that keeping the weight down reduces your chance of getting diabetes, more exercise is also good
