what symptom would be a main concern for diabetes?
i think my husband might have it
we have been married for 10 yrs now and he must weigh 150 pounds MORE than when we got married
he has really bad gout at times and sometimes his ankles remind me of tree trunks
he has gotten real lazy about helping me with the household stuff and kids thats another reason why i think he's put on soo much weight, he comes home from work sits in his chair till dinner then goes right to bed i mean he can't keep his eyes open i have evn tried having dinner earlier so he doesn't go to bed right after he eats but he just goes to bed earlier,
i am afraid to admit it but i am ashamed at how much he weighs
oh and he also for the past few years has had a purply patch of skin now by his groin area and i don't know if thats just from friction?
he also has a few whiskey cokes everyday when he gets home,
any suggestions?

Hi there, I'm type 1 diabetic so I only can tell you what symptoms I had. Increased thirst , I mean drinking incredible amounts and still feeling thirsty, increased urination, quick weight loss, numb toes.I was painting a border in my bathroom had to stand on my tip toes , and my toes went numb , but the numbness stayed and didn't go away until I got on insulin. You need to encourage your husband but don't tell him he's fat or that his weight bothers You. Just think of what you would want someone to tell You if you were heavy. It will depend all on him wanting to change.Good Luck to You!!

these are the classic diabetic signs ::: good luck

frequent urination, with large volumes of urine (polyuria),
excessive thirst (polydipsia),
hunger (polyphagia), and
weight loss.
Other symptoms might include:
fatigue,
blurry vision,
odd aches and pains,
dry mouth,
dry or itchy skin,
impotence (in a male),
vaginal yeast infections (in a female),
poor healing of cuts and scrapes, or
excessive or unusual infections

If your husband is 150 pounds overweight, it is quite likely that he may have developed Type 2 diabetes and he should be checked out by a doctor.

However, the bigger question is...why has he gained so much weight? What is preventing him from participating in life? I suspect your husband may, in fact, be somewhat depressed. Treating the depression (if that's the case) would go a long way towards helping him live a healthier life style.

sometimes diabetes has no real symptoms, however a blood sugar test taken about 90 minutes after eating is a good start, often this can be done on the spot by a doctor who has a test kit, or at a pharmacy

a glycated haemoglobin test and others can be ordered by a doc
