View Full Version : Toe is numb... Symptom or not??

Hi everyone. Has anyone ever heard of neuropathy or circulation problems as an _early_ symptom of Type 1? And has anyone ever heard of a diabetic who had the _opposite_ of some of the classic symptoms, such as _loss_ of appetite rather than excessive hunger?

I'm 42, I've been obese for my entire life (just like my aunt was), have Type 1 on both sides of the family (dad was borderline, his sister -- my obese aunt -- had Type 1, and mom's dad had Type 1), and I have a _few_ mild diabetic symptoms. I have a carb tooth, yes, but not a sweet tooth, but maybe that counts since carbs turn to sugar in the system. I dunno. I have never smoked nor drank. My only health compromises are obesity and lack of exercise.

I found this board while searching for info on symptoms of Type 1 diabetes. It lead me to the American Diabetes Association website, which said the symptoms can include:

* Frequent urination: yes, all my life
* Excessive thirst: not until recently... heat wave, here
* Extreme hunger: no... recent LOSS of appetite, in fact
* Unusual weight loss: definitely not (I eat despite loss of appetite)
* Increased fatigue: no increase
* Irritability: yes, but likely due to perimenopausal PMS
* Blurry vision: no

I realize any symptoms I have could be attributed to other diseases, as well as simply being too fat, or even the weather (LOL!), so I have never panicked about it. I’ve never yet taken a Glucose Tolerance , but I’ve had my blood sugar checked, and it’s always fine. I've sort of always expected that the day would come when I'd be diagnosed a diabetic. I'm wondering if that might be soon, because for the last 10 days, my left pinky toe has been numb. (FYI, I am currently uninsured, so I’d prefer not to be diagnosed yet in order to avoid a pre-existing condition, but I don’t want to hurt myself, either.)

My aunt lost some toes and toenails to Type 1, but only after she had been diabetic for, like, 15 years. Having numb digits isn't typically an early symptom, is it? It’s not mentioned on the list, but the list also doesn't say anything about slow healing. That's a symptom, though, right? My wounds have always taken a long while to heal, but they always do heal.

So, back to my original question. Has anyone ever heard of neuropathy or circulation problems as an _early_ symptom of Type 1? And has anyone ever heard of a diabetic who had the _opposite_ of some of the classic symptoms, such as _loss_ of appetite rather than excessive hunger?
