When I went to the Dr this past week to do a glucose test, they told me my sugar (from the finger prick) was 118. How high is this for fasting?

A fasting bloodsugar level of 118 mg/dl falls with the range considered impaired glucose tolerance and is often referred to as pre-diabetes. The range for impaired glucose tolerance is 110 mg/dl to 125 mg/dl fasting bloodsugar. Over 125 and it is diabetes. The optimum bloodsugar range is 70-90 mg/dl. 90-110 is kind of a grey area - not really optimum, but not really outside of what most labs consider normal.

Just an update.

I was diagnosed diabetic. They think, and I hope, that I am type II. Things are going well.

In the mornings, my sugar is usually 100-115 which is quite good I think.

At dinner it has been anywhere from 90-150 so I have to watch my snacks before dinner.

Its not so bad, and certainly not the end of the world.

GREAT ATTITUDE! Sounds like probably a Type 2, and that you caught it fairly early. Learn everything you can, and keep your sugars under control, and it will NOT be the end of the world...not even close!

Hello,I am only seventeen years old (almost 18) and my grandmother just died of diabetes and the many side effects that come with it...her body simply shut down. All of her kids have it, my 2 aunts and my dad. But what I was going to say is that I don't remember my blood sugar ever being below 125...usually 150 or higher. I am going for a fasting sometime next week..but I don't feel bad or anything. I am 5'7" and 123 pounds so I am not overweight like many diabetics are..but I've seen many that are thin. I just don't know if a kid my age could have it, and if I did, wouldn't I feel symptoms or something?

When my sugars ran in the 120-180 range, I don't remember noticing any of the symptoms either. Actually, the progression into Type II was so slow that I did not notice until after the diagnosis and control of my sugars. It was only then that I realized that the 15 min trips to the restroom and water fountain, insatiable thirst and desire for fruit juices, terrible nights of sleeping, and constantly being tired were symptoms of diabetes rather than just "normality" for me.

What I am trying to say is that you might not experience any symptoms at that range, or you might be so accustomed to being at that level, that you won't notice them until you make a rapid change in your levels. Either way, I am hoping for you that you come out fine; should it not, it sounds like you have an excellent grasp on what the disease is about.

I also had no symptoms of diabetes. I went to the Dr. for something entirely different (anxiety) and they decided to check my thyroid while there since I had lost some weight. My thyroid was fine but the sugar was high and this led to the GTT and then finally the diagnosis.

I am also very thin, I normally weigh about 135 but am now done to 123 and trying to gain some back.

If it weren't for the trip to the Dr I wouldnt have known until I probably got quite ill. I'm quite fortunate and you may be as well if you catch it early.
