Hello,

I'm new here and have been researching the GFCF diet for my son (22 mos. - currently being evaluated for PDD). My question is about enzymes...are any of you currently using enzymes for your children along with the diet? I recently read that if you don't use enzymes along with the diet than if the child is (even accidentally) reintroduced to G or C that they can 'crash' and have substantial regression, as much as 2 mos. later, because it is such a shock to their system. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

We use enzymes just in case of accidental exposure. She gets a sereniad every day at lunch - mixed in her juice. Also, there's a book about enzymes and autism and it says you need to give the kids enzymes while on an empty stomach so the enzymes can digest what is already in the gut and blood stream, rather than digesting the contents of the stomach. We did that when we first put dd on the diet.

My son tried a variety of the enzymes & didn't tolerate them. Got serious gutaches. But that's not typical.

It's not uncommon for people to use the enzymes to allow their kids to "cheat" on GFCF diet. Unfortunate, IMO, because their little taste buds (and expectations) need to adapt one way or the other.
