Well 2 days ago I got fired from my third job. I did tell them that I had a disability. It was a major hotel that I worked for. They called me in on my 90 days because it was my day off and asked me to come in at 6 p.m. I got there dressed and ready to work, and they fired me. They said I was really relaible, great person smart and great on the phones and with guests, but I didn't have a sense of urgency. Hello I can't use my left hand. the job was a job where i recieved all incoming phone calls for the hotel as well as if someone wanted to call a housekeeper or an enginer i would call them on a nextel system. I thought when there was a high volume of calls I did pretty well and even felt I was improving, but I guess still wasn't fast enough, so they said more attention to detail was needed plus more sense of urgency, which is what keeps getting me. When i got fired from the newspaper if I had told them about disability from the start then they could have gotten sued. But I didn't. Then I could keep up with the filing and paper work at an isurance company. Now what? I'm out of energy and ideas, I feel like a failure my mom is supportive my dad is not he told me to figure out how to make a good living, and get insurance. He has also liked to pretend I dont have a disability what a jerk! Has this happened to anyone else?

Hey Katharine,

I've never gotten fired, but I can sympathize with you. I struggle a lot at work because I get so easily fatigued, but I just keep pushing through and I like to work at a very fast pace (which makes me even more tired!). I worry about the future because I don't know if I'll be able to find a job that I can keep that will support me financially in the long run.

I'm so sorry to hear about your situation. Can you look for places that could be less stressful for you, like a bookstore?

I just applied at this stationary store, it's been 2 days and I haven't heard anything from them. I emailed my resume, however I am thinking to go there monday to fill out an application.

Luckily, my father is very good to me, all my life, so I never had been pushed to find a job...maybe this is somewhat bad since I'm a bit nervous about how I'll deal with a job environment but I must push myself!

Think of some jobs that can be less stressful for you. For instance, you say your left hand you can't use; does this mean you rule out jobs requiring both hands, like cashiers, receptionist, secretary, etc? I sympathize with you on this b/c I can't use my right hand much. It tends to become stiff when I get nervous and it makes it difficult to grasp certain things, like small change or hold a full glass. And at times it bends up a little (meaning it's a weak rist.) however, I think if I put myself in these situations, by the third, forth, fifth time, it might get better.

Have you considered day care or working with children...maybe something to think about...Don't give up.

I have actually found casshier jobs even though customers notice my disability to be nicer to me as an employee. I've aplied for a bunch of admin. assitant jobs but i'm going to have to make sure i have an understanding employer. my friend with no disability just got fired as well so that tells me that theres a high turnover rate. I was laid off for 2 days and i have already applied for 7 jobs. In the meantime I am walking for at least an hour everyday and trying to eat healthy. Everyone tells me all the time how strong of a person I am and how they admiire me. Its like my left hand will get stiff when i am nervous and also i can't move my fingers individually plus my nerves are screwed up sometimes even in the shower the water feels different on different sides. I find jobs with lots of paper work tend to give me problems.

Well I really can sympathize because I can't even find a job. When I go in for interviews the person that interviews me just looks confused like why are you even here. I feel hurt but I quickly get over it because I know thats life. I have only had two jobs out of my entire life and both were summer jobs found by my school.

Its good that you can get your foot in the door. Don't give up and you have to succeed.
