I'm just in 8th grade and my grandma put me on birthcontrol because she knows that I am sexually active. I'm confused on what BC actually does to me. And after I started taking it my period has been off and I had one for a long time and now I haven't had one for a long time. Is this normal?

You are quite young to be on birth control. It's hard to say when and how your period will regulate because you probably didn't start it long ago. Most women will tell you that their period changes until they turn 18, mine didnt regulate till then. Since I've been on the pill it changes my period and I'm 25.
How long have you been on the pill. Is there a chance you could be preg? What pill are you on. Some pills cause your period to disappear. Yasmin and Depo Provera are common ones that do that.
You can always call the doctor's nurse that perscribed it to you and ask your questions. Feel free to ask as many questions as you want here. We will all do our best to answer them.
Birth control tricks your body into thinking you are preg. through the use of hormones. Estrogen and Progestrin are the usually in them. The hormones prevent you from ovulating. And if you don't ovulate you don't release the egg that the sperm can meet to get you preg. The hormones with your body cause your period to fluxuate and be inconsitant.
Also remember birth control isn't 100% accurate. So you should use a condom as well. Be safe, hope everything is ok!

I've been on it for 3 months. I just started my period today. But i'm still sort of confused on what bc does? i thought it made your period completely stop. And i first started my period in 5th grade...i was sort of an early bloomer...unfortunately i started growing breasts and tallness then and now i've stopped and i'm not very big lol. thank you for your advice!

Some birth controls make your period stop. Because birth control is hormones it changes the way your ovaries funtion. There really isnt a definate answer for why you get it and others dont. Every woman responds differently to a hormone. I was on Ortho Evra and I still got my period. What that one did was regulate my cycle. Then I was on Yasmin and that make my period disappear. Now I'm on depo provera, and I havent had my period.
Most women don't get their period on certian types of b.c. Depo Provera and Yasmin are two of them. I am guessing your doctor put you on one that gives you your period. It may have taken 3 months for your body to regulate and adapt to the b.c. He/She put you on this type so you get your period every month. There is a debate if not having your period is healthy. So most doctors put you on b.c. that give you your period monthly unless you have problems with other b.c., the hormones in the b.c., or problems with your period (longer periods, heavy bleeding...)
What is it that you don't understand. Maybe if I know that I can help you better.

Thank you so much...you helped me a lot! I have some more questions though...my doctor suggested maybe shots that you take like 3 times a year...idk if that would be good or not...better than the pill? Plus I'm terrified of shots. And I was thinking about talking to my doctor about Yasmin..would that be a good idea?

I'm glad I helped.
Your birth control should be discussed with your doctor.
The Depo Provera is the shot, which is what I get. The depo does not contain estrogen, it just has all progestrin. Every three months you get the shot, you can get it it your butt or your arm. I choose the butt, the arm tends to hurt. I like it alot, because I don't have to remember to take the pill. (I don't always eat or go to sleep at the same time! ) But I'm guessing your grandma helps you to remember. I had some side effects the first 3 months that I was not thrilled with. I had some spotting and hot flashes! The hotflashes only lasted me 2.5 months. ( you don't have to look at the shot if you get it in your butt :) )
The Yasmin was good because it was a low dose and it got rid of my acne! I was thrilled. I just didn't like itbecause I had to take it before I went to sleep but I never went to sleep at the same time. I was told to take it before I went to sleep because it prevents possible nausea.
I would suggest a low dose of hormones for you because you are young. You should also be sure to take calcium, especially with the Depo - long term use has shown possiblility in bone mass decreasing. I don't plan to be on it for a long time.
Ask all the questions you want. I'll do my best to answer!
