What has happened since the last posting? Surgery? Ablation? My brother was just diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma. Trying to decide about surgery. Told there is 2 months to 1 year without surgery OR 17 months to 3 years with surgery. Need information regarding the surgery experience-what to expect post operatively. Thanks for your time!

My husband has just been diagnosed with bile duct cancer, (one week). Currently he has an internal/external tube which drains the bile. The external part has been capped off. This treatment helped clear up the jaundice and bring back his appetite. I am currently in the process of applying to MD Anderson in Houston. Supposed to hear back within three days. We saw a liver surgeon who said surgery was his only option, but that would be determined during exploratory surgery to see if the cancer has spread. If it has spread - no surgery. He has seen five DR's during all the procedures he has had and each Dr. says the diagnosis is inconclusive, but they feel certain it is cancer because of the initial symptoms, abdominal pain, yellowing of skin and whites of the eyes, no appetite, weight loss and skin itching. My husband is diabetic and also has a heart condition, making it questionable if he could withstand surgery which we are told is "huge". How about you. What do you know of this disease and what kind of treatment?

My brother went to Philadelphia 2 days ago. They started the surgery, partial hepatectomy (actually all of the liver but the 2 left sections of the left lobe), but did not complete. Found 2 tiny tumors in the "good part" so surgery can't be done. Now we are back to finding a clinical trial to try to stop the growth and destroy the tumors. His only hope.
As for the cholangiocarcinoma, his primary site tumor growth was in the liver tissue, not in the bile duct. If you need a liver surgeon, contact Albert Einstein MEdical Center in Philadelphia. Dr Reich is the best. He was not able to help my brother, but he tried when no one else would. I have praise for his office staff and the hospital as well. They were professional, attentive and timely.
You will probably need a complete work-up with CT scans, MRI, labs by an oncologist before finding a surgeon.
This is so difficult emotionally.
I hope you quickly find the path to your cure.
