my question is does anyone take any vitamins or supplements for their lungs?
my fiance was hospitalized back in october for weezing really bad and he was realllly low on the peak flow meter.he smokes, has asthma, and works in construction around a lot of brick dust etc.he has not had and episode like that since he has been out of the hospital.first the doctor said it might be silicosis, but its very rare these days, then it was a mild obstructive lung disease, now yeaterday when he went back for a 6 mth follow up the doctor said they are not sure what he has,it could be silicosis,it could of been his asthma ,or smoking, because all three of them have similar causes that could have made him get like that in october.so i am lost.he is only 25 and the doctor said at his age his lungs can handle a little trama but if he quits smoking then his lung will again function normal.any suggestions or input would be appreciated and also, about the vitamins or supplements.thank you

Smoking depletes the body's vitamin C, so he should definitely be taking at least 1,000 mg daily. In addition, a daily multi-vitamin would provide extra zinc and other nutrients. But of course he knows all the vitamins in the world won't help unless he quits smoking. I just don't want him to wind up with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and on oxygen like me.

Yup, vitamin C takes a real bashing from smoking but won't actually help his lungs. I had blood clots on my lungs and now take garlic and ginkgo biloba, but I think that's only any good for blood thinning as opposed to an actual lung problem.
I'm afraid you answered your own question in your post. If he gives up smoking his lung will be fine, and pretty fast.
I smoked from the age of 13 til I was 21. I gave up, overnight, and within a week noticed how much easier I was breathing, I could walk uphill easily without getting out of breath, no wheezing, I could smell and taste properly. And people who had never said anything before, suddenly told me that I, my clothes and my breath smelt good again!
No vitamin or supplement in the world will help if he insists on carrying on smoking, he will just be spending extra money on vitamins when he is already wasting it on cigarettes.

Not sure I really understand the question "Why are you on here?" if it was directed at me. I read a lot of the different topics and posts on this website. I previously had blood clots on my lungs which is why I was on the lung and respiratory disorders page, but I have a particular interest in vitamins and supplements which is why I was reading your particular post.
I appreciate that giving up smoking is hard for many people and I didn't mean to sound unsympathetic, but the point of the site is for people to give the benefit of their experience and opinions.
I hope your fiance finds the willpower to give up soon.

and if it was directed at me, I echo what emsr2d2 said. I took tons of vitamins over the years I smoked, but ultimately none prevented lung disease.

i wasn't trying to offend anybody.i just wanted to know what was your diagnosis .i know vitamins wont stop or cure anything,i just wanted to know what was good for him to take.even when he decides to quit smoking i would like him to take vitamins.i have high cholesterol and i have been taking a few vitamins ,not sure if they benefitted me any but it's worth a try.

No offence taken! But I think certainly my point was that quite honestly, until he gives up smoking there's very little point taking any vitamins. Smoking takes so much of the goodness out of your body, and unfortunately also negates a lot of the effects of any supplements and vitamins you might add to it, so really I was just saying that giving up smoking would be a better start, then worry about what to take!

Oh, now i understand, troublex2. I was diagnosed with emphysema/chronic lung disease after having smoked 45 years, so was lucky to have a lot more good years than your finance may have. Doctors are saying now that asthma in smokers definitely leads to lung disease, plus he has a double whammy working construction.
Having said that, only he can make the decision to quit. Nagging makes us smokers more determined not to stop. Quitting is one of the hardest things i ever did but it is so worth it!
In the meantime, he should take 1,000 mg Vitamin C for his immune system, plus a daily multi-vitamin.
