Help me clear something up. I just read that using a lubricant when you're TTC is bad because even water-based lubricants make a hostile environment for sperm. My husband and I are TTC and always use a lubricant (Astroglide, specifically) because I am extremely dry. Sex is very painful if I do not use one. Has any one else heard that lubricants are bad? Has any one here gotten pregnant still using lubricants?

I got pg ( and so did a few others here) using Preseed. I think it's the only Sperm-friendly lubricant out there.
Check it out ;)

Preseed is the only sperm friendly lube on the market. I'm not real sure if they sell it in any stores, I've never seen it. I think you may have to purchase it online.
And yes, using lubes like Astroglide and KY do infact create a hostile enviroment.

I did a search on Preseed just now and found a site that has a study that says that with Astroglide and Replens after 60 minutes there were no sperm either living or swimming and with KY there were some still alive but none swimming. Now, mind you this site was trying to sell Preseed, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. ;)
ETA: "either living or swimming" that sounds weird. Of course if they're swimming they're alive! :p Sorry - I'm in a strange mood today. :D

In addition to Pre-Seed, some women have had success drinking green tea daily or taking Evening Primrose Oil supplements to increase cervical mucus. You might research these on the net. I personally had some success at increasing cervical mucus with the green tea, but did not try the oil supplements. Good luck!!
BTW: There are women who conceived while using lubes like Astroglide. It must not be the WORST thing in the world! ;)

Well, this news sort of freaks me out. I called my doctor about using a lubrication this afternoon and he told me that lubrication should only be avoided if problems of infertility are present. He said that millions of women get pregnant every year still using all different forms of lubrication. I called up my sister-in-law (has 4 kids), and she said she used KY and Astroglide each time she conceived. However, I still understand now why lubrication can create a poor environment for sperm. I'm not really sure what to do because I cannot have intercourse without lubrication, but that PreSeed IS SO EXPENSIVE! I'm not sure I can afford it considering my husband and I are having intercourse at least every other day. 6 PreSeed packets are $14.99, and that doesn't even include shipping! Yikes!

Another choice might be real eggwhites. I've heard of that, but it sounds messy to me. And it would definitely take some preparation, so there goes the spontaneity. If your DH doesn't mind, it might be worth a try.

Perhaps you could just really limit your use of a lubricant. I too understand that Preseed is expensive, and it's just little packets of it, like 6 or 7 from what I saw. I would just suggest not getting all crazy with the lube. Just use enough to get you through it without any discomfort.
You could try the egg white thing, but it's pretty messy and somehow I'm thinking an egg won't smell to pleasant there either.
I've heard alot about Green Tea and Evening Primrose oil, I haven't tried either but alot of women say it gives you more mucus, perhaps you should try that.

I have heard that warm water is supposed to work too. If you choose to do the eggwhite thing I would buy the carton of pasturized egg whites as not to get infection. I have heard that astroglide and Vagisil are OK to use when Trying to Concieve. If you use PreeSeed you can strech one tube out to last 2 times. Just use your finger to apply. I too Have to use Lube every time or it becomes painful. I tried the preeseed thing once, but it is exspensive. I use vagisil right now, I am going to see how that works. When I got Pregnant with my Daughter I used KY. Good luck! Hope this Helps!

Hello, I just wanted to say that I too got pregnant while using Ky. However I had a m/c at 5 weeks. :(
Prayers that the lubricant will not affect you getting pregnant.
Baby dust to all,
Jacqueline

Thanks again for the advice. I bought 2 boxes of the PreSeed last night. For those of you who have not tried it, I'll write a review after I've used it a few times. On another note, my husband woke up this morning and said he had a dream I was pregnant. Maybe it's a sign of things to come? Hope so!!! ;)

Hope this doesn't gross anyone out but what about saliva as a lubricant? Can our saliva cause harm to sperm?

LOL! I hope not because that's DH's favorite kind!

I just read on a pretty professional medical website that saliva also makes for a hostile environment, along with even water-based lubrications. According to the website, saliva has a different Ph-level than cervical mucus. It is changing the Ph within the cervix that makes for a hostile environment. I guess that is why PreSeed is recommended--it is the only lubrication out there that is the exact same Ph-level as the cervix.
P.S. I'd post the website link here, but I think the moderator would delete it. :)
