hi, everyone.
i'm a 19 year old female and (obviously) new here. i'm rather modest so it's hard for me to talk about women-related issues, but i can't find answers anywhere else, so i figured i'd give it a shot here. for about two weeks, i've had an ache...it's sort of like a cramp (not in the stomach, but below that) but ibuprofin etc doesn't help ease the pain, and it's unrelated to my period (i just had it a week or two ago). there is also absolutely no possibility i'm pregnant. this pain varies in terms of intensity but it's almost always present in some way, and there are no other symptoms i have noticed (though i did have a bit more discharge than usual for a day or two afterwards, but i assume that is fairly normal).
i assume i have some sort of an infection, but i cannot find any information that seems to match this sole symptom. anyone had a similar experience or have ideas? i hate my gynecologist and was planning on switching before i actually had to have an exam (i went before for a breast related issue), she is condescending and intimidating and i don't feel comfortable telling her about any of this, but all of the other gynos in the area claim they cannot see a new patient on an "emergency" basis and the earliest anyone else could see me is in 10 days or so. i don't think i can wait and i'm kind of scared about what effects something like this might have the longer i wait... i hope it's not too serious... any thoughts would be much appreciated. thank you so much.

Why dont you try calling in to a doctors office, I know when I went to the dermatologist and I would have questions about my skin and things like that, I would call and talk to a nurse. They were really helpful and usually gave good advice. A nurse would probably know what was going on, (your probably do have an infection) and may be able to recommend over the counter drugs or even prescribe something for you. (The nurse I talked to did that for me). I would call the doctors office that you have been to because they have your records...or even a health unit or something like that...anyways..let us know how it goes.

thanks for the reply. i probably should call my doc's office - my parents have offered to call - but the problem is, i've known this woman since i was old enough to know anybody, and she's close with my family... i think i'd be way too embarassed to give her any specifics, even if she's not legally allowed to disclose them. anyway, i have an appointment tuesday with the gyno that i hate, i think i can stick it out 'til then (the pain was a little better today, so perhaps my body is taking care of itself?), and then have an appointment with a different one friday so i can officially change gynos and this "we can't see you because we don't know you" thing won't happen again. hopefully someone will know what's up, or i might go crazy. anyway, i will post again when anything happens, thank you again for your reply :)

I really think that it could heal itself. If it is like a cut, then it would only make sense to eventually heal...hope it all goes ok...let us know. :)

I know this might sound silly, but with your period being a week or two ago, do you think it could possibly be ovulation pain? Most women have more discharge (egg white consistency) when they are ovulating, and many also have that kind of ache. I usually have it for two days. The kind of pain you're having sounds exactly what I have when I'm ovulating.

At some point I found I had to change doctors from my pediatrician for the very reason you discuss. As adults we sometimes need to start fresh with new doctors that we don't have any old baggage with.

i'm definitely realizing now that i should change doctors, because i don't feel comfortable discussing stuff like this with her, and also it's not really her specialty.
thanks for the advice, it actually hasn't gone away, and i really doubt it is related to my period because it's been fairly consistently hurting for about a week and a half now. i was looking up info online and of course the only thing i can come up with is PID which supposedly needs to be treated immediately or you can have permanent damage... perhaps i am being paranoid because most people get it from having sex and i didn't, and i definitely don't have any STD's (which is usually a precursor) but this is the one thing i keep coming up with with the symptom of lower abdominal pain. i hope, hope, hope that this isn't the case, i am kind of terrified that i am going to get to the gynecologist's tomorrow and they'll tell me something horrible like i can never have kids because i couldn't be seen for a week and a half. i have always been a worrier... :(

Don't panic, just go see a new doctor and tell him everything. But since you are in pain I would go in as soon as possible.

gyno wasn't such a pain today, but she chalks it up to wacky hormones, she has put me on the pill to regulate them and claims that the pain will go away when i get my next period. she also prescribed me tylenol with codeine because i told her that advil etc hadn't been working after she suggested it...but believe it or not it doesn't seem to be helping (then again i just took it an hour and a half ago). sigh.

I'd get another appointment with someone else. I know you may have to wait, but its better to at least get one now than get one later then have to wait longer. If you call around you may be able to find someone who will take you.
It sounds to me that this gynocol. isnt the one for you; I hate it when doctors seem to do a halfway job. I watch ALOT (yes I am a nerd) of discovery health channel; one thing I would say is, if what one doctor tells you doesnt sound quite right, then find another and see what they say. Although I dont have THAT much experience, I would say that tylenol is kind of a stupid treatment, it only makes the pain easier, it doesnt address the actual problem.
So please go to another doctor, I would have to hear later that it was actually something worse and it was to late to do anything.
Better be safe than sorry.
sorry you are having a hard time..:)

in all honesty the codeine isn't even really helping things, it's just making me tired. the instructions are to take 1-2 pills (whatever is needed) every six hours, i am taking 1 every six because they're supposed to last me for a while, and i'm still in a ton of pain. i don't know what happens with my test results if i change docs right now... do you think she is still obligated to call me if she finds out something is wrong if she is no longer my doctor? she made a follow-up appointment for two weeks down the line, but no way am i waiting like this for so long if it doesn't go away by itself.
i believe my mom hasn't cancelled the appointment with the other gyno for friday, so i should probably go in for that one. though, if it hurts this much tomorrow, i might just go to the ER or something. i didn't want to do that...but god, it hurts so much. thanks for your support, it means a lot, i'm really kind of scared.

hey,
good news...the pain has pretty much subsided, i still get the occasional pang, but i haven't been taking any painkillers for the past few days. test results should come back in about a week, and i'm just hoping nothing abnormal comes up and that my body's taken care of itself. thanks for your support, i will definitely post if anything changes!

I am also 19. I had a simular pain in my lower abdomen. When I went to the doctor, at first they told me my uterus was enlarged, after I got an ultrasound done, I found out that it was an ovarian cyst the size of a watermelon on my right ovary. The reason it hurt was because it was so big it was putting pressure on my other organs. That may not be the problem but thats what it turned out to be when I had a pain such as the one you described.

i also have that pain, right at the moment...it's like a dull ache that seems to hurt more when sitting. it's almost like you want to stretch it out. i haven't got my period yet this month but remember feeling like this when they told me i had ovarian cysts. i haven't had this kind of pain in a while thats why it's scaring me. i hope it's nothing serious.

hmm.
i have had a lot of pain recently but i also recently got my period so i am pretty sure it was just related to that. right now i am feeling okay, but i want to make sure i'm not overlooking any possibilities.
to the first girl who responded - bluemiss? how did your doctor decide to send you to get an ultrasound?
and to the second, confusedashell, how old are you, and how old were you when you were told you had cysts? how were you diagnosed (ie, what doctors did you see and what did they do/tell you?)
was the pain up to both of your diagnoses constant, or did it ever subside?
if any of these questions are unclear, please let me know. i hope you're both doing well.
