Hi everyone. I suffer from almost constant bacterial vaginosis. I have been treated with antibiotics a number of times and my clinician tells me that she thinks its because I might have ovarian cysts but I cannot afford to go to a gynecologist to get it checked out. My Mom had ovarian cysts so it is highly possible that I have them as well. Any advice?

UMMM no way. Isn't there Family Planning where you are?? You should be able to get checked out for anything related to your area down there.

Oh and just so you know I'm 14 weeks and I'm having that same darn constant bacterial infection. I read that its just some women get them more easily because we have more bad bacteria that takes over the good kind. And pregnant women have them more often too.

Yeah the family planning clinic is the one that referred me to a gynecologist. And I'm not pregnant. So, what do I do?

You join this never ending battle with the rest of us that have bv. I've been dealing with this for years. I've seen different doctors. None of which seem to know anything. I think I know more than they do just from the research I've done myself on recurring bv. I eat alot of yogurt now, I rinse down that with vinegar and water very often. I also take acidophillus pills daily. I hope that this helps you somewhat. Good luck. I know just how aggravating this is. I just hope that I wake up oneday and it is GONE.

Hmm thanks. One thing that does seem to help for me is to wash the pubic/genital region with a mild soap only or just rinse it with water. Personally rinsing with water just isn't clean enough for me so I just use a very mild soap. I personally use Ivory and it is wonderful. It makes my skin soft and the infections don't seem to be quite as bad either. I was using body washes and stuff that have harsh scents and chemicals in them and apparently these can aggravate the infections. Thanks for the advice! I can't really afford acidophilus pills but I can try the vinegar and water and the yogurt thing. :)

I use dove soap. I just have sensitive skin and it is the only thing that works for me with bathing. I have used ivory before. I just haven't had much luck with anything. The acidophillus pills don't cost too much at wal-mart. I would try the water and vinegar though. I shave completely thinking that maybe that would help some. I just don't know, it is like NOTHING will beat this. There has to be someone that knows exactly how to rid it and keep it away.

to go to a family planning you dont have to be pregnant. I used to go there for my birth control and just check ups. Usually there are ones that do it for free for low income people and thats where i go. I go to the one by my college and they dont charge anything if you make under a certain amount. Its actually a really good deal you should go to it. I know what you mean about the infections...it seems every time i go to the gyno i have a new yeast infection and i dont know why i get so many, but they give me stuff for it or tell me to get Monostat

Actually I would think that shaving would make it worse because when you have, you almost always get very tiny "microcuts" or "microscrapes" in to which bacteria will enter . Obviously this is not a good thing. This is not to mention that you might transfer bacteria to the area with the razor if the razor is not clean. Oh and just because it looks clean doesn't mean it is clean. I'd personally just trim the hair down there with a pair of small scissors every now and then but if you really like to have the area shaved then that's your business. ;)

That's where I always go. We have a free family planning clinic here in town where I go for regular physical exams, free yeast infection cream, and also free antibiotics for infections. I used to go there for birth control back before I became Catholic. Now that I am Catholic, I don't believe in birth control. But this isn't a religious board so I won't discuss that here. :p ;)

I also know that about shaving. After having no luck with fighting the battle even before I just recently started shaving, I just figured I'd do it anyways. I have had this long before I started shaving down there. I was just trimming. Thanks so much though for letting me know.

Also don't use tampons and those spongy things that girls like to use in the shower. Use a clean washcloth everytime because the spongy thing (sorry I can't remember the name of those things) we just use it and hang it in the shower to dry and bacteria is still on it. I used to get this thing every 2 months before my DR told me not to douche or use tampons.

Well, I don't use tampons as they are too uncomfortable for me. I also don't use the spongy things anymore. I do use a clean washcloth every time I shower. To not do so is gross in my opinion. I have also stopped douching even though it is quite tempting to do so, especially after my cycle.

Anyway, I went back for my annual pelvic exam today and they checked for infections and I am totally clear of all infections. I guess that my precautions have worked! Also, you might want to know that apparently birth control can increase your risk of infections. My clinician told me earlier that birth control has the side effect of increasing your risk for infections. Its amazing what they don't tell you normally isn't it? I actually had to ask about this.
