My husband had a physical and the dr said everything looked fine including bloodwork, until he had the urine sample. He had sugar in his urine and he was given a finger prick his blood sugar was over 300. He has bloodwork done the week before and his fasting blood sugar was 89. I have pcos and I know that unless you have a problem no matter what you eat you can't make your blood sugar high. Even with my insulin resistance I never test high. The week before my husband and I were both very ill with possibly strep and he went to the hospital he had iv steroids and antibiotics, he never finished his prescription though, is it possible that he still has some infection in his body that caused the high blood sugar results?

I would make a couple of comments:

1. Any reading at any time over 200 suggests diabetes. Diabetes is diagnosed in two ways. One is with a fasting BG over 126. The other is after an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). If two hours after taking a glucose drink BG is over 200 you are diagnosed with diabetes. Neither test is perfect. In other words you could pass the fasting test but fail the OGTT. Or, it could be the other way around. Best to have both tests.

2. That said steroids can elevate BG temporarily. However, I suspect that is more likely to happen to someone susceptable to diabetes. Suggest getting both the fasting and OGTT after after the steroids are worn off.
