View Full Version : lower rib discomfort

05-25-2006, 10:31 PM
I have been having some pain, discomfort in my lower rib cage area:

-Bottom left rib is swollen a bit uneven from right side
-I feel around with fingers, and find a sore spot that is very tender
-I can feel a nerve or something which seems to be causing the pain
-Very dull pain but sensitive to touch
-Have had no trauma to the area, just a very hard cough a week ago which I think cause the rib to move out and pinch a nerve
-I can breath, move, cough, sneeze with no pain/discomfort just when I touch this area it hurts.

What could this be>? the lowest rib is protruding slightly and I have a dull pain from the breastbone, its really strange!

Please help

I have had a pain like this for many many years...no dull pain from the breastbone though. I went to several doctors when it first started and the "guess" by them is that it has something to do with IBS. No doctor could figure any other reason and it was way worse if I was constipated. X-Rays showed nothing. I'd be very curious to know if you go see a doctor what they will diagnose you with!!!!! Keep us posted!

It could be a condition known as costochondritis. I think that a rheumatologist is the specialist for this.

I have unexplained pain around my ribcage, too; been going on for a couple of years. Mine might have been caused by 3 pregnancies and a large (9 lb. 10.4 ounce) baby.

Good luck!

This condition, like many others, can be very difficult to diagnose. I, too, thought that I had IBS. However, after having my incisional hernia repaired earlier this year, thos 'ibs' symptoms haven't really manifested themselves...
