Ok first of all let me state that I have an anxiety disorder w/ panic attacks and I'm a severe hypochrondiac. Perhaps that will explain why I am freaking out over this. Last week it was my blood pressure I was freaking over, now this. Let me explain.... Diabetes runs high in my family. My maternal grandmother, my great aunt, and my great uncle all have type 2 diabetes. My maternal great grandmother also had it. My mother is hypoglycemic, and my cousin is also. I have been told that I am hypoglocemic by a doctor, but not actually tested. I was diabetic w/ my pregnancy. Anyway, i have a glucose testing machine and yesterday i was driving and decided to check it. It was 71, I knew that was a little low even though I felt fine. I stopped at the store and bought some cookies, apple juice, and then went home and ate a creamy pasta lean cusine. I checked it again after about 15 minutes and it was 104. I went back to work, and then about 3 1/2 hours later I checked it again. It was 77, so I got some ham lunch meat and cream cheese. Ate some of that and checked it again. It was 189. Waited 10 minutes and checked it again .. 85. I started having a panic attack b/c it seemed like my levels were going crazy. My husband immediately took me to my grandma's so i could use her tester. I checked it on the way there and it was 77. Then I got to her house and begged her to take me to ther ER...we checked it again and it was 85. I started calming down and checked it again. It was 91. I stayed in the upper 90's for the rest of the night. I woke up the next day and checked it..it was 78. I got up and got in the shower, started getting ready for work, didn't eat anything and checked it again, it was 91. I'm having a nervous breakdown!!!!!!!!! Can u tell? I'm terrified that I have some horrible disease that is causing my sugar levels to go crazy. I'm terrified that it will go too low and I will pass out or die. My grandma told me to stop checking it b/c I'm making myself crazy. She said just listen to my body and eat healthy. I feel like i'm about to lose my mind b/c I'm so terrified of this. Is this normal that my glucose levels seem to be going crazy? Should I put myself in the hospital and have it constantly monitored? Someone please help me. My doctor won't even take me seriously b/c he knows that I'm freaking out about something different every other week. Two weeks ago it was asthma....but I am truly terrified that my sugar is going too low. Is something wrong with me? Help!!! By the way..I'm a 23 year old female..and I'm not overwieght at all.

Hi
Firdst off, Relax. You have a very normal bs levels after you eat. If you have Hypoglycemia you are still OK. You are eating and it is all taken care of. The biggest this to know is that the machines make mistakes. So when you get an odd reading most likely it is always wrong. So do not give this a second thought of worry. Do always do another test and a third to compare with to know which one ois accurate.
You are doing great. You did teh right thing by going to your relatives and checking it again there. So I believe you arae quite fine. Hope the rest of things go this well for you. You are very normal.

you are worrying yourself a little too much over this i suspect, none of the low readings you have noted are very low at all. perfect bs would be 80-120, perfect isnt going to happen with anyone......if you eat some carbs, its gonna go up, if you don't its gonna go down.....if you get readings down in the 30-65 range, then you will most likely (but not always) be feeling it as well. if you have a tester, check your levels between the hours of 5am-noon and see if they may be a little higher than other hours of the day, if so, this would be normal as your body releases hormones to assist waking hours......

I'm glad that it seems that I'm overreacting. I hope this isn't as serious as I assume. I'm just terrified that i'm going to pass out while driving or at home w/ my 2 year old. I always get something to eat when I feel shaky and confused. I never just let it go, but I don't understand it. Sometimes I'll get the shaky, confused feeling and I'll check it and it'll be 83. Then sometimes I'll check it and it'll be 71 and I feel completely fine, so I'm terrified that it will go too low w/out me knowing it and I'll pass out or go into a coma....something horrible like that. So, you all think i'm ok...I hope so b/c I'm soooo nervous about it..Why does it go from 71 to 91 sometimes w/out me eating or drinking anything to make it go up...that makes me worry that something is wrong http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif

in order for you to pass out or go into insulin seizure you need to be 20 mg/dsl or lower. You are not anywhere near this. All normal people get BS levels as low as 40 if they fast and exercise. So you are very normal and have nothing to worry about with your present life style. So you can relax. You are ok at this time with the information you have given

Hi cabins513,

I don't think it's a big deal that your blood sugars will go from 71 to 91. It could be the meter or it could actually be your sugar. Like blood pressure, blood sugar changes all the time and it's not always dependent on what you eat. It sometimes has to do with stress and other factors. I don't think you have much to worry about from what you've posted your blood sugars to be, but it's always better to be safe than sorry so it's good you're getting your HbA1C checked (that's what the test you're having done is called. It checks the average blood sugar over the past three months.) Good luck.

Hi Cabins,

All the numbers except for that one at 180 look very very normal. I suspect that one high one was a bad reading. There is no reason for it to be high after eating protein. Keep in mind that the accuracy of a home BG meter is plus or minus 20%. You can get quite different readings by testing a large drop of blood with 2-3 strips. Try it.

Can I just add you need to wash your hands before every test as this can affect the test result.
My daughter has had really high results and then realised she has ben eating a banana or something which has made the result inacurate.

Hello again
shaz66 has brought up a valuable point that has not been mentioned in posts in the past. Contamination of a strip can happen if there is not a lot of care taken. By following the recommendations of keeping your hands and the test site and all utensils clean you will receive a more accurate test. That is if the test strip is not faulty or if the machine does not commit a fluke reading. When in doubt with strange and odd test results, do three total and the two that are the closest are the ones that are more accurate.
