I posted a recent messege on here and thank you ron for responding. I took his blood sugar this morning with my uncles machine which is pretty acurate for him. It read 17.3 about two hours after he had breakfast. This is really high no? Wondering maybe he should be looked at before tuesday or is waiting okay.?

Sharebear,

That 17.3 translates to 311 in US units. Most recommendations are to go to the hospital or call the doctor if BG goes over 14 to 17. However, if the truth be known many diabetics see these numbers from time to time. It does not do them any good, but does not kill them immediately either. A 17.3 clearly indicates diabetes or a very adverse reaction to that other drug. My suspicion would be Type 1 diabetes.

If you want to be cautious call your doctor or go to a hospital. If you don't do this then I would suggest keeping the carbohydrates your son eats to near zero. This would mean eating meat and cheese (protein and fat), instead of bread, potatoes, rice or of course sugar (carbohydrates). This is not a solution to diabetes, but will minimize the effects until you can get into see the doctor. They will most likely prescribe insulin. Here is a site for more information:

His blood sugar needs to be taken again along with a log of his symptoms. I have taken my childrens blood sugars and they have come back high only to get the to the Dr and their actual blood sugar is below 100. Glucometers are not an exact science and known to give crazy readings from time to time.

The Dr will want to know more about symptoms than anything. Has he been going to the bathroom alot, drinking alot, feeling run down, etc.? How long have the symptoms been going on? How many blood sugars have been high? How many of them were fasting? And the list goes on.

One of the best things you can do for now is to limit his carb intake and get a bottle of Ketosticks. Ketosticks measure ketones in the urine which are a byproduct of high blood sugars in diabetics. If his blood sugars are really that high, he will be spilling ketones. If they come back positive for ketones, it is best to call the Dr then and tell him what is going on. Word of warning though... It is best not to test for ketones with first mornings urine simply because they are a sign that fat is being burned and most people will have ketones that time of day since they havent eaten since the evening before.

I just know from experience that one blood sugar is no reason to panic no matter how the machine has been performing. Good luck to you and to him

Mindy is correct in that home BG meters are not that accurate. They are +/- 20%. However, the number you gave of over 17 is 300% higher than what would be expected. I presume you took the reading more than once? Any number that high should be checked with a second reading. If the second reading does not agree, then a third should be taken.
