im confused!!
have just started taking lithium and the patient care leaflet states to reduce salt intake and avoid caffeine. was also told the same thing by both my doc and a friend of mine whos a psychiatriac nurse. but ive read a post on here stating that adequate salt intake is important to avoid lithium accumulation and intoxication. would like to know other peoples views on this and how they have changed their diet accordingly? am worried about becoming ill on this. thanks, Fallen

Because lithium is related to sodium, it is important to drink plenty of fluids (avoid caffeinated beverages) and have an adequate supply of dietary salt. Too little salt can cause the body to hoard lithium instead, and too little water will decrease urination, which again can lead to lithium buildup.
I've never seen anything in reputable medical circles to the contrary!!!

You got it right,Ruth. Lithium always requires sodium in the diet, as you explained. Thanks for coming to the rescue of Fallen-Angle
