After going thru allergy tests twice (all negative results) & talking w/my GI specialist, I am no closer to a solution than before. Through a process of elimination, I have learned that when I eat foods w/margarine and/or sugar, I develop an allergic type reaction (severe redness, hives all over, severe abdominal cramps, dizziness, etc.) No one particular food seems to cause the symptoms, but appears to be related to the fats in the diet?? Anyone have simliar reactions?

You may want to look into something called an elimination diet. A process in which you clean your digestive tract with a laxative and then you eat certain neutral foods for seven days and then you start adding food groups one at a time until you hit the one that is bothering you. There is more to it than what I mentioned, so you would probably need to find a place that would give you the details.

Moon's suggestion is right on.

Margarine is a combination of hydrogenated oils, and just by that fact alone, is BAD for you. Do a little search on hydrogenation of oils, and educate yourself to the dangers. They are many.

Despite the fact that sugar finds its origins in plants, it is a HIGHLY processed non-food by the time it gets into your body. There are no benefits (except taste), at all, to common table sugar, and far too many unpleasant side effects. If sweets MUST be eaten -I confess to a LARGE likeness of sweet http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif - those found in their most whole form (a piece of FRESH fruit) are the safest, when eaten in moderation.

So, to answer your question, it could well be the fats, and it could be the sugar, or both or neither. An elimination diet should answer the question.

MOON & COPPER are both right about hydroginated or partially hydroginated oils and sugar. They are very bad for us but our bodies can tolerate small amounts. However because of the over use of these products we can develop sensativities or allergies to them over time. Because they are present in so many products, we eat far to much of them and this can cause problems. My suggestion in addition to theirs is to educate yourself and start reading lables on every food product you consume. A diet of unprocessed foods is best. It takes extra work but you will reap the benefits. Eat lots of fresh whole foods. This type of lifestyle takes time and effort but the benefits are worth it.
