I've been struggling with a cornucopia of symptoms I hope someone here can
help me make some sense of.
I'm a 25 year old male, and up until my symptoms began a year ago I'd always
been very healthy. In fact, for the 2 years leading up to the onset of my
symptoms I was engaged in a very rigorous excercise program involving heavy
weight training with an epmhasis on building mass, coupled with moderate
cardio routines.
As a result of my desire to gain weight I would eat quite a bit. I would
typically eat three large meals per day (eating to the point of physical
discomfort) and several snack-sized meals as well. I have always been
prone to having an irritable stomach with bouts of heartburn and diarrhea.
Over the course of several months I would notice that after a particularly
large meal I would feel a great deal of discomfort in my abdomen while in
a sitting position and would feel it very difficult to obtain a full and
satisfying breath. About February of 2000 I got to the point where I
constantly felt the inability to take a deep breath and then started feeling
palpitations and irregular heart beats throughout the day.
I was initially diagnosed with simple GERD and put on Aciphex and then Prevacid.
Neither seemed to reduce my symptoms. I had a chest X-ray taken (clear), two
full sets of Pulmonary Function Tests to check for asthma (both negative) and
an EKG taken at the emergency room after a very bad episode. The EKG showed
evidence of PVCs and I was sent for a full Stress-Echo (which was completely
normal). The doctors then chalked it up to anxiety and put me on Effexor.
The Effexor did make me relax over the seriousness of my symptoms but did nothing
to alleviate the sypmtoms themselves. I went through a 6 month period of taking
the drug and have been off it for 2 months - and feel better now than when I was
on it.
At this point I still have vague chest pains, noticable skipped heart beats,
and the feeling that I cannot take a deep breath. However, I've also
begun having a great deal of gas, abdominal pain and abdominal distension.
It is worst at night, where I will belch almost constantly before going to bed
and even after small meals I will feel very full and have an extremely
distended stomach. Over the course of 6 weeks my stomach below the navel
has distended to the point that most of my pants do not fit...at all. Also
I feel very uncomfortable while lying down or sitting and often get the
sensation that something is pressing up against the bottom of my ribcage in
a very uncomfortable fashion. Finally, it seems as though I can feel
my heartbeat in various parts of my body: chest, stomach, neck, fingertips, etc.
In fact, if reclining and resting a book on my stomach the book will noticably
bounce up and down.
This has been a nightmarish episode in my life...I've missed work, changed jobs
to alleviate stress and done just about everything else I can think of. I will
be going to a GI specialist within the next few weeks to get checked out again
but was hoping someone here could help make some sense of all of these
crazy symptoms.
