View Full Version : Board re-named?

Interesting; I see the board has been re-named to "Acid Reflux" rather than "GERD".

In some ways this may be good, because I'm convinced alot of confusion is being caused (including by doctors) by using "disease" as interchangeable with "reflux".

The fact that everyone refluxes should make it clear that "acid reflux" (or GER) is not necessarily a disease, but possibly just a symptom of something else. Some people - maybe me - may think they have the disease (bad sphincter) while they still need help with what is just a symptom. Maybe they can find out it's only a symptom here, and not be intimidated by a "disease" label.

Sorry for the ramble! :o :)

You make a good point, I have no idea what is wrong with me, LPR, Gerd, Acid Reflux, non of the above. Who knows. I know that nothing appears to be physically wrong with me. Just awful reflux that interferes with my life 24/7.

Renaming the board "Acid Reflux" was a good decision since it encompasses more than just GERD... namely LPR.

I agree with Suncat. I'd estimate that 1/2 of the posters here have LPR, not GERD and LPR is a very different form of reflux than GERD. So "acid reflux" is a better name that encompasses both forms of the general condition. And why is LPR not called LPRD for "Larygopharygeal Reflux Disease" if GERD is called "Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease". LPR is every bit as much a disease as GERD. I also just returned from my big-shot Gastro doc at UPENN and he told me that he was recently at gastro conference where LPR was a major focus of the discussion and they (finally) came to a concensus that LPR, in particular, has an enormous capacity to be a true life-wrecker, and that it's impact should NOT be underestimated by doctors anymore.

Interesting; of course, apparently the reason GEs never cared about LPRD was that it "has nothing to do with the GI system" they study. Seems that many GEs have to be prodded to say "maybe you should see an ENT".

Actually, I've seen "LPRD" before; I just think noone wants to write out the whole acronym since it isn't as pretty as "GERD".

And speaking of disease, again, I still think that sometimes we think we have the DISEASE, but in reality it's just a symptom of some other disease. If we don't have a bad sphincter - we don't have that disease. Until they change the definition. (All this really should be called "sphincter disease" or something; the "reflux" is misleading as everyone refluxes every day.)
