Hello,

I thought, just for fun, that maybe we could start a thread talking about the foods we miss the most.

I'll start it off by saying that I'd give my right arm for some good Chinese food. Yummmm.....

You can eat roast beef? Cool. I haven't had red meat in so long that I think I've forgotten what it tastes like.

Another food I miss....fried chicken.

A good cup of COFFEE. Driving by Dunkin Donuts and smelling their coffee really hurts in the morning when I need to wake up. Also McDonald's ads talk about their new premium roasted coffee. I drool.

Also miss an occasional glass of wine or a drink with friends on the weekends.

Sick and tired of turkey . chicken . turkey . chicken.

I am starting to "cluck" already.

And let's not forget about PIZZA. My husband brought himself dinner one night and what does he buy. PIZZA. I was ever so jealous.

I think that at times when I feel good I could eat these things that I long for, but I am too smart to think that I won't have repercussions.

The fear of pain is greater than the need for the former foods and drink we used to enjoy. It's not fair!

Oh heavens, I miss coffee too. Sometimes I get together to chat with a friend over coffee, and he drinks coffee while I drink water.

And let's not forget.....chocolate. Someone needs to invent something that tastes like chocolate without having any actual chocolate in it.

anything with spaghetti sauce.. I haven't had good pasta in so long!!
Thankfully pizza doesn't bother me as long as it's not slathered in sauce. I most often buy pizza that has no sauce on it, but that's not always an option.

To those of you who have taken chocolate off of your daily menu, I'd like to share my success with white chocolate. Though nothing can take the place of milk chocolate or dark chocolate completely, I was in my local supermarket and found the new M&M item. White chocolate M&M's Since white chocolate is not really chocolate, but has the same consistency and the same sweetness I bought myself a large package. Three large packages later I live to tell you all that I have not suffered one bit from eating this new product. So there's hope for some of you who are daring enough to try this new treat. Too bad it didn't irritate me because I do have to lose 15 lbs but with this new "find" it's going to be that more difficult. But I am happy. Go figure.

Ya know I refuse to give up my coffee, thank god it doesn't hurt too bad!

I gave up everything for this crap except the coffee & the smokes, I need both now to survive a starvation diet, lol

Question about coffee.......having an acid problem that mainly strikes in the middle of the night, should I worry about trying a cup of coffee in the morning. If it creates an acid problem in the morning, could it still affect me during the night. Not being on coffee still brings out the acid. Wondering if it makes a difference whether or not I really do skip the morning coffee. Maybe I'll try it one more time. It's only been 1 1/2 years.

I miss the spicy Mexican and Italian foods also. My favorite summer food was the tomato/mozarella/basil/olive oil salad. With summer here I will really miss that.

I also miss soda pop and orange juice. Iced Tea has always been a summer staple for me--I will REALLY miss it this year. Water and soy milk as my only drinks is getting really old. Before, I was already drinking 5-6 bottles of water a day.

I am still finding out some of my trigger foods not on the list from my GI doctor. So far potentially I have bananas and peanutbutter sandwiches that are causing mixed results.

I miss salads. I never did like tomatoes anyway, so I can live without those. But what's a salad without some kind of dressing? I used to think ranch dressing was a food group. But....I'm afraid to eat it now because it has lots of vinegar, plus onion and garlic in it.

And I hear you about water getting boring. Like.....very boring. But drinks like koolaid are all acidic, so......

Grr.

Boy I would rather take my Prilosec for the rest of my life than give up coffee, garlic, spicy food, etc., etc., etc. I suppose someday I'm going to have to, but for now, good food is just too big a part of my life. Like that commercial...welcome back.

You're lucky. Many of us are on medication AND have to watch our diets.

Windora, you are lucky that meds worked for you. I am not on meds now because they didn't help & I had reactions. Even on the meds I couldn't eat.

Folgers just came out with a new low acid coffee!!!!! I am drinking some now!!! SO far so good! Hopefully I am allowed to post that

I always understood that the caffeine was as bad for you as the acid.

What about medications that have caffeine in them, would that also be prohibited?

Curious to know what foods to eat. I have followed the gerd diet leavng out spices - coffee - tomato products, fats, etc etc etc but I'm still plagued with heartburn and acid. Turkey fish chicken - still produces 2AM battles with acid taste, belching and sometimes slight nausea. I am wondering if it could be medication related as I take extra strength Maalox or Mylanta before bed. Anyway, what do most of you drink with your meals? I have been drinking decaf tea (green) as a replacement to soda/wine,etc. I am doing wrong? Can't get it right yet when it comes to food and drink. Help? Thanks!!

Have you tried cutting down on your meat? I find that, for me, a lot of protein can cause problems.

And tea, of any form, is acidic. Water is really the only thing we can drink.

Unless this new low-acid coffee works out, that is. I'm interested in hearing people's experience with it.

lolasmom,
I can only tell you from my experience that it is your body that makes the choices. I eat a very bland boring diet and while I am better than I was last year I still have reflux 24/7. I drink 1-2 cups coffe a day and water the rest of the time. I don't eat any acidic or spicy foods, almost zero fatty foods. Some people can eat certain foods while others cannot. I read about another person who cannot eat bananas, I am the same, I get heartburn from them. It is mostly about staying away from all "bad foods" amd the rest is trial & error. When I first had reflux I lived on subs, club on wheat with provolne and nothing else. no veggies! I also live on carnation instant breakfast. If I don't eat I get worse reflux. Also as a FM my reflux gets worse once a month.

Good luck,
Katt

lolasmom,

I was a frequent Iced Tea drinker. I stopped when my GI Dr. told me that components of the tea effect the esophogeal sphincter which can cause it not to tighten all the way. When this happens, it can allow acid to back up from the stomach.

I too am tired of always just drinking water. I haven't had too many problems with soy milk though.

You can eat roast beef? Cool. I haven't had red meat in so long that I think I've forgotten what it tastes like.

I can't eat red meat either. Can't even keep it down (sorry to be graphic).

Besides beef, I miss the usual suspects: Pizza, pasta with red sauce, anything with lots of cheese, iced coffee in the hot weather, fried foods.

I'd love to be able to have a glass of wine when going out to dinner, too.

Edited to add: Someone mentioned salad dressing. Has anyone been able to find (or make) a "safe" salad dressing? All the bottled brands seem to have garlic (my most harmful food) or vinegar (also bad). Thanks in advance.

I made a salad dressing with plain yogurt, some cucumbers chopped up, and a little bit of salt. If you can tolerate some dairy, it's better than nothing. Previous to these problems I always made my own salad dressing or just balsamic vinegar or salsa so those are out. The store bought salad dressings have too many spices. I've also used plain apple juice as a salad dressing. It sounds weird but at least there's some flavor. I've also just put beans on my salad and if using canned ones - a little bit of the juice it's packed in. I'd be interested in hearing from anybody else with ideas.

Taape,

Thanks for the idea of the plain yogurt-based salad dressing. That might work for me if I use the fat-free yogurt. I'll give it a try. :)

LovesTeaching,
Your welcome. I always use fat free yogurt and it tastes fine.
