My son was in ECI and we have taken him to all sorts of specialists and no one has any answers so I know there just might not be an answer at this point but I'm just wondering if there is anyone out there that has experienced this same situation.
I would love to hear from you!
Thanks!

My son didn't start to talk until after two and even now at six he gets speech therapy three times a week. His speech is very broken and sometimes we have a hard time making out what he is saying. He is develpmentally delayed and attends a special ed class. He is also ADHD. Is you child not talking at all or just not sentences? For the longest time the doctors thought he may be autistic but now it seems he may just have autistic tendancies. It's so hard for doctors to pinpoint one thing that they usually label them "multiple disabilities" so not to "tag" them. My son also attended ECI classes for 2 years. He has kids in his class now that talk very little.

Has your son had his hearing evaluated? Have you had your son evaluated by a developmental pediatrician? If you haven't then this is where I would start asap.
You don't mention any other concerns but the speech delay in itself is reason to have him evaluated. My son has PDD/NOS which is a form of Autism. He has received alot of therapy and is extremely high functioning and almost indistinguishable from his peers. He is three.
I would talk to your doctor because if by chance it's more than just a speech delay, the more help your son receives now the better his prognonsis will be.
Good Luck

Hi ladies,
Thank you so much for your comments. Yes we have had his hearing checked, had him see a neurologist, developmental pediatrician, and many more specialists, he was also in ECI from 18 months until now that he's 3. This coming August he's going into a special school for kids with delays or mental problems. I've had all the tests done on him but NOT ONE of the billion doctors could tell me what was wrong with him.
No he's not talking at all, NOTHING, he just grunts or points. He's very active and the doctors ruled out any kind of Autistic behavior. All they have ever been able to tell me is that he's delayed, that's it! It has been very frustraiting but I've learned to live with it.
Hope to hear from you guys soon!

Please do a search on "Apraxia" and see if you think it applies to your child. My son is autistic, but his teacher has a son with apraxia and I have learned some about it through her. Her son understands and is very bright, but he has extreme dificulties with speech. Dispraxia means they have some speech, Apraxia means no speech at all. Let me know what you think after you read up on this, it is the only thing I can think of since autism has been ruled out. Hang in there hun.

dont always believe that autism is ruled just because a doctor says so too;) our pediatrician let our son go with no speech until 3 1/2 because isaac liked to cuddle. he kept saying that because he did that that he was just probably shy of his own voice... what the heck does that mean anyhow!:) i think that looking into apraxia sounds good too... the thing is about these specialist is that they think that autism as well as any other disorder is only going to manifest itself in one way and only one way... and none of the specialist agree what that is:) they think their opinion is right and that you are a parent so not always going to know you own kid. GRR!:)
anyhow it turns out that isaac is severely autistic the likes of which havent been seen in this area in YEARS so his doctor was just a tad bit off:) if you dont like their anwsers keep looking:) push the doctors to look. alot of times they just glaze over the basics and dont stop to really look unless you go HEY look at this! is this normal? yadda yadda yadda:) dont cut them slack because they have phds... didnt do our son any good:)
as long as he doesnt have any other delays... maybe he is just going to be mute? is he working on sign langauge... even with isaac being as autistic as he is and maybe even MR he can understand some basic sign and even imitates it. could help him with speech too... our psychiatrist said that if you use speech and sign together it helps to slow down what you are saying so that it can be processed better and teaches visually what all that garble being spoken means... i dont know if that actually works but isaac has gotten so he understands everything spoken to he since we started pairing it with sign. helps his frustration levels too if he can get his point across as well:)

Have you tried taking him to a special doctor's office that only deals with Autistic children. Otherwise Snowy06 has a point. Your child could have a certain kind. Good luck!

hey there *hugs* i am here for you if you need to talk, and will be praying for you guys. My daughter still isn't talking either at 2.5 years. maybe you can take your son back to the dev pedi and have another evaluation done and write a list of everything you worry about or behaviors etc and see what they say. like i said i am here for you...how are you feeling btw?

My son has apraxia. He wasn't talking at 24 mos. He said 4 words, mostly just sounds. He pointed and grunted. That was about it, besides learning a few signs. EI missed it the 1st time b/c he is so normal otherwise. It wasn't until I had a private evaluation that they said he had it.
Anyway, there are other things that can come with apraxia which is most common. Its rarely alone.
With apraxia (and NOT the RIGHT kind of speech therapy) you child will not talk or not be understandable. I am questioning if my son is getting the right therapy at this point.
Here are what my son says. Mo (no), hep (help) pup (cup) ine (mine) ay-ee (airplane), mow (more) un-ah (spongebob) and so on. No one but the immediate family and the ST can understand him.
Keep looking for answers. Keep asking docs, there is something going on!
