Here is my update....
I have taken 9 pills. My first 3 days I still felt like I was in unstable hormonal hell.... like usual. Then around day 5-6... I felt a sense of balance. I can't explain it... I'm only day 9 on these bcp's and I feel better than I have felt in a year.
Ladies.... ask your doctors about this option. It's NOT like HRT. I just wish I would have done this sooner. I will keep you all posted and keep hoping this is not just some temporary fix.... just wanted to let you all know :)

I am glad you are feeling better. I have taken BCP for several months now. I started late last month, so that messed up my period but that was my fault. The only problem I have noticed is that the first week of each new month on the pill I am getting such bad nausea and headaches. It gets better the second week, but I still have alittle nausea. Not enough that I have lost any weight though! I did gain some right at the beginning of starting the pill, but that has tapered off now. I do sleep much better, acne has improved some too. I get pretty bloated towards the end of my packet. I guess there is always good and bad with everything. I hope you continue to feel good. Ann

I'm very glad to hear that you are feeling better. I hope that this continues for you.
I had to comment on your statement: "It's NOT like HRT." I think it actually is. Depending on the pill you are taking, it is a combination of synthetic estrogen and progestin. It's possible that you were low in these hormones and now that you are getting them, you feel better. I think it doesn't work for some women because they may have different hormone needs and the bcp doesn't help to balance them out.
I certainly don't mean to offend or say this is not a good option because it certainly can be for some. I truly hope this works long term for you! :)

Just wondering how old are you Mistyeyze? How long have you been having problems? I started having problems about 3 years ago. I am 43 now and have really bad migrains the day after I start my period. The Gyno told me it's from my hormones getting lower. I have never had migrains until now. I asked him about checking my level. He said "Well if your having your periods still you don't need hormones". I was on bcp when I was younger. Just wondering if they would be helpful.

I am 51, soon to be 52, how long do you think it is safe to take BCP's? I have only been on them for several months, but I still wonder if I am only delaying menopause by taking the pill. My periods are better, and I am having less ovary pain so I think the pill has helped the cysts too. I am scared that as soon as I go off, all the reasons I started on the pill will come rushing back. I have no family or personal history of cancer or heart disease. Thanks, Ann

I certainly won't go off the bcp but I do think it's common to have to change brands occasionally. Been on Yasmin for awhile but it seems less effective now than it was initially. Also starting to spot much more than usual and starting to get hot flashes again. Have any of you that have been on it for awhile had to switch bcp's or do you find the same one just keeps on working. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of the bcp.

BCP helped me at a time when I has having all the symptoms listed and more. I had to switch several brands for various reasons that I can not recall right now :) (another symptom of perimenopause). I finally had to stop taking bcp because of my elevated blood pressure. Although bcp did lessen the severity of my symptoms they did not totally get rid of them yet I was able to regain some quality of life and for that I was VERY thankful (thank God).

Im 46 and have never taken bcp's in my entire life. I am doing the loestrin24 and I noticed the same thing. I was on a rollercoaster the first few days, then I started feeling very balanced and better than I have in the past few years. This premenpausal stuff is not much fun.

Hi Kati,
I posted some info on a different thread that explained the difference between bcp's and HRT. The way I understood it, the bcp's don't suppliment hormones like HRT, they actually take over the ovary function, which is why they are effective for birth control. It's kind of confusing.... but seems to be more stable in that with normal HRT, you can still have highs and lows depending on what your own body is doing. I hope that made sense.
So far it's working, because lord knows I couldn't take the instability much longer. Have you ever talked to your doctor about this option? It pains me to see any woman have to suffer because of hormones  Don't we have enough to deal with, lol

Hi Angela,
I'm 43 also, and I started having problems about a year ago. I also got a new gyne, a WOMAN.... No offense but "Well if your having your periods still you don't need hormones" seems like a cluless guy thing to say. I am of the opinion that women are better at knowing how this FEELS, and thus are better at treating us. If I were you I would get a second opinion. Quality of life does matter for us, even if we are still "getting our periods". I don't know if the bcp is the right option for you, but you deserve to know that it's an option out there.

Mistyeyze, you are probably right. Men do not have a clue when it comes to women. Even Drs.
I probably will see if I can find a woman Gyn for my next visit.
I also seen where someone said a good book to read "Pause". Does anyone know who the author is?

Again, don't mean to be on the opposite side. From research that I've read about bcp use for menopause is that is delivers a higher dose (as opposed to typical HRT) of estrogen to shut down the ovaries so there is no pregnancy. The "low" is produced when you don't take the bcp for 7 days during your cycle (for a typical bcp) and have a period. Again, I agree that the bcp works well for many women who are in the throes of terrible peri symptoms. It's something to discuss with a doctor so that they know the risks involved. But just to feel halfway normal again is a blessing!

I'm 52, have been on low dose bcp for 14 years and doing great. According to my FSH blood level, I am post menopausal, but am still having light periods and absolutely no physical signs of menopause like hot flashes.
My doctor said I haven't gone through menopause until I miss periods for one year, but doesn't being on the pill create "artificial" periods, and mask the symptoms of menopause I might be having?
thanks

Yes Kati you are right.... I still feel really confused about risk fators for all these things.... I hear conflicting reports, then, in a confused state I try to make decisions. It can be scary no matter what. My doctor is on the side of the fence that it is worth the risk, because for one, the risk itself is not well understood, even by doctors. She said if you take ANY medication, there is risk... right down to OTC stuff.
This "transition" stinks no matter how you look at it.

It does stink - that's for sure. I do agree the bcp may be an option for many women who have low risk factors. I think in the long run if something makes you FEEL better, you ARE better. Feeling horrible can really drag you down and I think it can be very damaging to your emotions, which in turn can cause physical damage. Hope you are feeling better every day!!

Thanks Kati.... by the way how are you doing these days?
I'm almost a month into the bcp's. I did have a couple days around mid month that I literally wok up with that hormonal psychotic feeling. I don't know any other way to describe it. I got really stressed thinking that the bcp's weren't going to be the answer after all, but then in a couple days it passed and I felt better. I'm going to stick with it for now, because overall, I've felt better since I started.
It's probably good that I've gotten to the point that I *know* when my hormones are out of wack. It hits me like a ton of bricks. I do not feel like the same person. I never knew that hormones could be so powerful, but they are. I think you are right, if we FEEL better, we ARE better.... that's the whole point of living, right? (My way of justifying something I never thought I would do-- be on some kind of HRT for LIFE)

mistyeyze,
Just an FYI - it can take up to 3 pill cycles before you receive all of the benefits of the pill. I felt fine and stayed that way after 1 1/2 months on the pill. I guess that was how long it took for the pill to take over.

mistyeyze,
I have been back on it for about 1 year. I was on it for awhile and decide to take a break. Wrong move! Within 3 months I started having the racing heart, hot flashes and horrible anxiety again. I went back on in May of last year and have been on it since. I no longer get the heart racing or anxiety attack like feelings that were followed by a hot flash. This all started 3 yrs ago when I turned 40. When I look back I now relaize that I had some other symptoms before this as well. If you are healthy and have no risk factors, the pill really is a great way to deal with symptoms - I dread the day I have to go off of it!

I'm on the "period" portion of the pills and I feel like crap. Sore breasts, CRAMPS from hell, over-all sickly feeling, and only spotting.
I went to get my Rx fillled (my first pack was a sample).... my CO pay is $40. Regular cost $100. Unreal.
It's been so long since I was on the pill for actual birth control, I honestly can't remember what periods were like then.
I guess there is no free ride in this peri-meno......

During the week of placebo pills, you are getting no hormones, that is probably why you feel horrible. After a few months on the pill, you may find that the week on the placebo pills is not so bad. Good luck!

Just read what you all have said about taking b/c pills. I took the pill for a short time from Dec. 04 thru Apr. 05. I was at the end of my rope with my periods...they got so heavy that I was becoming anemic... As a last resort, the gyn. started me on the pill. It did take 2 months to regulate me. I still had a rather heavy period for 2-3 days with pretty bad cramps. I can't say that I felt good while taking them. I was just ok...it was a lot better than not knowing if I should rush to the hospital from all the bleeding. I decided to go off the pill...had a period and then nothing....in November I had a very scant one...I have had some hot flashes...not bad...I had some heart palpitations....for about a month. But the worst is the fatigue which began just a week before my last pills and continues a year later....So is this what might be called instant menopause???!!!!! I am wondering if any of you has experienced this tiredness and fatigue?

I've been doing well, thanks! My personal life is crazy, but nothing bad. I have been on new prescription of bioidentical hormones for about 4 months and I think I'm feeling pretty much back to normal. I still have a few minor symptoms, but nothing I can't deal with. Let's face it, we can't stop aging!
As others have said, I think you need to be on the bcp for 2-3 cycles to get the full benefit. I was on bcp most of my adult life and my periods were a breeze! Ah, those were the days!

I'm going to give it a few months for sure... at least. Hi Kati!
I hope it's not step issues ;) We've had a few incidents lately that are making me cringe at the next several years. I have GOT to get this peri under control before my SD hits FULL blown puberty-- sheesh, my SS too for that matter. Extended summer visitation is coming up.....
I'm glad your bioidentical hormones are working! I know what you mean when you say we can't stop aging. Too bad huh? lol Aging really stinks! But still, I see very vibrant women who are in their 50's, 60's and even beyond, so I know it's possible to age AND be happy. I just didn't know peri would be so hard to manage..... but if millions of women have survived, we all will too.

Yes, partly it's been crazy due to skids: graduation next Monday and another one getting married (he and his fiance are way too young and unfocused) in July. Any time there is an event like this that involves coordinating with their mother is totally disfunctional. I could go on and on, but it's not the right board! Plus, we've been leasing a house because we relocated in January, and looking to buy. The owners wanted the house back so we had to scramble to find a place and will now be moving in less than 2 weeks. Luckily I'm still not working, so can take the time to do all the packing. So again, it's not all bad, just crazy.
Of course, I started my period today so I'm taking Advil like crazy!!
Hopefully for you, the bcp's will kick in by the time summer sets in and you will feel better overall. I would imagine you will have less PMS, less anxiety feelings and sleep better. Hang in there!

Hopefully for you, the bcp's will kick in by the time summer sets in and you will feel better overall. I would imagine you will have less PMS, less anxiety feelings and sleep better. Hang in there!

Kati I know what you mean about dealing with the ex!! Believe me!! Too bad they don't have a step section here-- we could go there. I hope things smooth out for you. Is this going to be life long BS we are going to have to deal with? When I'm 70 will I still have to deal with my husbands EX? Sheesh.
Well I'll try to send some good vibes your way, and hopefully the hormones won't make things worse. That's always my fear. Do you know I already tried to track my period for our summer visitation, LOL....
Keep me posted

I just posted on the "Parenting Board" to the Moderator to ask if they might consider adding a Board for Step Parents or Step Families. Not sure if this will work, but worth asking!!
Yeah, I just keep wondering if the EX feels as uncomfortable as I do in some of these situations. I really think she's mostly oblivious to anyone but herself. My only thought recently is that maybe she has horrible hot flashes - tee hee :D

Katie great idea! I hope the moderator responds!
I'm sure we could swap some great stories. I gotta be honest, I'm kind of dreading summer visitation. Here at Camp Dad I feel overwhelmed when they arrive ready for non-stop adult provided entertainment on a daily basis. Interesting, my hubby always seems to have that "Oops" need to run into work (he owns his own business) when the kids give us that "I'm bored" look even though we just did 10 things. Lord, give me strength!
Here's the kicker-- while I'm struggling to entertain a bored 11 and 13 year old while my husband is at work, the EX is enjoying kid free time next to her pool.
Somehow I find that irritating.
Okay, I'll wait for the other board, LOL.....

Mistyeyze---
I'm on day 12 of Nuvaring (low dose BCP) and on day 5 or 6 I felt the fog leave me, but the past couple of days I feel like I'm back in hormonal hell. By far my worst symptom is the woosies/dizzy/tilted feeling and was hoping that BCP's would help with that. I don't want to panic about this, but wanted to know how long it takes for BCP's to do their job?
I have a host of peri symptoms, I'm only 39, but my GYN said she goes by symptoms no age. Should I be concerned at this stage or give it time?
Take good care

Hi Lucent,
I think you need to give it a few months. I have had some ups and downs since starting the bcp's so it's not an instant cure, as much as I wished. My first month, when it was time for the placebo pills-- I got horrible cramps and felt like I was losing it. I went into a panic that the pills weren't going to work. During the 2nd cycle, I was up and down, but the downs weren't as down as before, and today is the first day of the placebos and so far no cramps (no period yet either)... feeling okay today (knock on wood).
A few ladies here informed me it does take a few monts. Try to be patient, even though I know it's hard. Boy, do I ever know.
Keep us posted on your progress. If need be, maybe add an antidepressant into the mix. I'm going to my doctor to discuss this next week. Some here really seem to have success with antidepressants.
Good luck and glad to meet you

I will be starting my 6th month of BCP. The periods have improved greatly, no more heavy flow lasting for days. Only 1 or 2 days of a moderate flow with mild cramping. As much I wish I could say all the other peri symptoms were gone, they are not. Still having some insomnia, stomach problems with nausea, dizziness at times, ovary pain and my acne will not clear up! Bloating is much worse now than before the pill. I have not weighed myself, but I know that is going up too inspite of the fact I am exercising where I wasn't before. The BCP is not a cure all, I wish it was. It helped my worse problem which was the heavy bleeding. I worry that will return when I go off this fall. Ann

I read an article today on another site that said BCP's, even the low dose ones, had more estrogen in them than any synthetic HRT. This article stated that women in peri should be very careful about continuing to take them or start them. It disagreed with doctors using BCP to control a woman's heavy period during the peri years. The "menopause specialist" who wrote the article said there are studies that show increase risk for breast and uterine cancer if you are on the pill during peri. True or false? Thanks, Ann

I just had my annual OBGYN appt. 2 weeks ago and my Doctor told me that the pill actually reduces your chances of getting uterine cancer.

Ann,
It seems to me the different studies and doctors don't agree on the risk factors. It is very frustrating. I wish I could be more help but I'm confused myself.
I almost feel like I'm trading quantity for quality..... and the quality isn't even that great- which really sucks.

Are all of you in menopause right now and taking BCP? I am starting menopause and switching from BCP to HRT next week.
I think HRT is very similar to BCP but lower doses of hormones. I'm new at this so after hearing all of you, I'm not sure what to expect. I considered staying on the pill, but the doctors (two different doctors) agreed that I didn't need that much estrogen at my stage.
With the BCP, I did very well with little if any symptoms. Just normal cycles. I just don't want to go psyco or anything!

I think the majority of the women on BCP are actually in perimenopause, not menopause. My gyn wants me to take it again to stop the heavy flow and ease the symptoms of peri. Years ago I had numerous polyps on my uterus. BCP will stop them from regrowing and curb possible cancer of the uterus fromthe polyps.
I had a gyn appt. and the doctor prescribed Yaz. I have not started it yet because I was in mid cycle when I had the appt. Now, I have to wait a little while longer. I have had two large gallstones and had a major attack over this weekend. I am seeing the surgeon tomorrow to get that removed. As I was reading on the Yaz website, that BCP is not good for people with gallbladder disease....yikes! could have been bad.
I do have a question for the women on BCP. What are the worst symptoms on the BCP? I am nervous to start taking it again after YEARS without it, but if it will stop peri symptoms and prevent polyps, then I am willing...just want to know what to expect.
Thanks!!
