Hi,
My wife and I , we have been discuss about the chicken pock vaccin and my question is should I let my son have vaccin or not? I'm for vaccin but not with wife. Would somebody please explain to me what is the benifit to have the vaccin? and if you don't have the vaccin what is the disadvantage/ sign effect you will get? Also, after got the vaccin ... Do we still have a chance to get sick by chicken pock or Shingles.
The main reason of this question is because my dad having the Shingles. He is 81 yrs old. He want to come to visit us but since my boy never has any kind of vaccin... that is why it just worry me alot. Please help. ASAP  :blob_fire

The benefits of getting the vaccine are that it will prevent severe chicken pox most of the time (about 70%-90%) and puts the child at a lower risk for developing shingles later on. Also, there is no guarantee that your child will have a mild/normal case of chicken pox. There is always the chance of complications, and in rare and severe cases, the chicken pox can cause death.

Disadvantages:

Since the vaccine is not foolproof, there is a chance that an immunized child will still contract what is known as "breakthrough" chicken pox from someone infected with natural chicken pox. Breakthrough chicken pox can occasionally be spread to others.

I would advise skipping the vaccine if your son has any immune system deficiency disorders or if he is allergic to any component in the vaccine (i.e., gelatin). You can always speak with your son's doctor about the pros and cons of getting the vaccine, but the benefits usually outweigh the disadvantages.

Thank you for your advice.
One more question, since the FDA approved the vaccine for shingles please follow the link http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/health/bal-te.vaccine27may27,0,3076851.story?track= rss . :bouncing: :p :D
So now if my father get the vaccine, would it help to cure him or prevent to spread that virus to his grandson? :blob_fire Thanks again.

My son (now 16) got the vaccine when he was 2 and he never got the chicken pox...and was around alot of kids with them. He had no adverse reaction at all. You have a very low chance of getting shingles also......shingles is only contagious for a certain number of days I thought, or just when blisters are fresh...better check with doc.....

My daughter got shingles from the chicken pox vaccine. She has never had the chicken poxs, but did get shingles a few month after getting the shot. She was 2 or 3 then. But her case was rare.

If your son will be going to public school, he needs to have the vaccine or a doctor's documentation that he's gotten the disease. Keep in mind that this is a 2 part vaccine, so allow time before preschool or kindergarten to get both doses.
