View Full Version : motivational issues wearing me down

For over two years now, i've found it very difficult to get motivated. i have stopped sleeping so much, since i got a normal working hours job, and that has helped a little. but I was on depakote for a series of months and gained a lot of weight. i hate my body, but can't get myself to exercise much; i simply have the hardest time getting into the "i can do it" mindset. it just seems so hard. it's devastating cuz i used to be a cross country runner--10 miles at a time, no problem! (of course that was 8 years ago...) now, i can barely walk home from work without being out of breath. i ordered a motivational book in march, but it still hasn't arrived. :( and i heard it's great for weight loss.

my mood: stable, balanced; i don't feel depressed, or manic. my meds are perfect! :bouncing:

but how do you get yourself motivated???

any suggestions or feedback would be most appreciated! i need guidance, lessons, anything. :)

Hi Megan,
Basically Im in the same situation, but I have several other health problems.
I dont have much to offer as far as motivation, except what I've been told.
Start slow, 1-2 mintues a day, something simple so you dont get to discouraged.
Try that for a couple of weeks then add a couple of mintues. Dont beat yourself
up if you miss a day or two just pick it back up, even if you have to start over.
I guess it's kinda of like slowing increasing your stamina. You can even reward
yourself with something only for your success. A little Piece of sugar free chocolate
yummmmm. or a weekly reward, pair of earrings you've been eye'n etc, etc.
Good Luck, be kind to yourself. Kiehn

Megan

If it is possible, try getting together with a friend or neighbor, and walk together each night as a routine (not a very long walk either-at your own pace). Just having the company around would be something to look forward to and help get your spirits lifted up a little. This isn't always feasible though with schedules, but it is worth a try.

Hang in there Megan. You can do it!!

Thanks for the thread. I have the exact same problem. I gained 40 lbs in 5 weeks from Zyprexa. Why don't thy tell you about the weight gain side effects of these drugs? I would have NEVER tried it had I known. It didn't even help me either. Anyway, I also used to be in incredible shape, working out 45-60 minutes every day. I have lost all motivation and am always depressed about my weight and the fact that I have a closet full of clothes I can't wear. I'm also single and would like to go out and date since I'm finally stable, but feel too self-conscious. How do I get motivated? I feel like a different person. I was so motivated for years!
