Is there anything that can be done to help a child overcome a lisp? My daughter is 7 1/2 and her lisp seems to be getting worse. I have asked the school about speech therapy and it seems that it isn't considered a problem. That unless the speech problem affects her learning she won't qualify for speech therapy services. She is doing well in school but at some point I would think the other kids might start to tease her about it. Ive had people comment that her "lisp is so cute"...I don't think it is. It drives me crazy to listen to her sometimes as it sounds like she is talking with a mouth full of food. I'm not completely sure it isn't often intentional on her part since sometimes it is much worse than others. I have asked my son's speech therapist for some tips on how I can work with her at home and I seem to get vague answers. Nothing specific to do. Any tips from other parents/educators out there?

I'd contact a different speech therapist. I clearly remember two kids in my elementary school who were both going to a therapist for a lisp. Granted that was 20 years ago. But still, there have to be excercises to help it. Good luck.

thanx..I am wondering if it has to go thru the pediatrician..a referral that is..I don't want her looking for help for this as an adult as some others on the boards have had to do b/c they didn't get therapy as children. And for me, it is hard to have long conversations with her b/c it is so pronounced, and that isn't good either. I try to practice with her on the correct pronounciation of words with S in them, but sometimes feel she might be getting frustrated and think I am disappointed with her b/c we have to keep repeating and she still doesn't get it right. I would like to know how to make a fun game or exercise out of it.
