After 2+ months on PPIs (first Protonix and now Nexium), my most persistent symptoms are a heavy pressure feeling in my upper center back and a lump in my throat. I understand that the lump is pretty typical for LPR. But what about the pressure in my back? Sometimes it feels like gas pain and sometimes not but it's pretty much always there. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice? Does it go away? I saw my ENT yesterday and I'm not sure he knew what to think or do about the back symptoms.

I have similar symptoms with chest pain that radiates to my back and down my arms, which is not cardiac related. m y whole situation started with just a lump feeling in my throat. i didnt get this amount of chest pain until i started the nexium 2 x day. i am going to give the nexium 2 more weeks as prescribed. From what i can tell for myself it seems as though the cause is esophageal spasm which can be caused by GERD however i have few other GERD symptoms. I have been taking Magnesium supplements recently to help relax the smooth muscle tissue in the esophagus and it seems to help some. Also i have read about peppermint oil helping with esophageal spasm. Ironically peppermint oil is not recommended for people with GERD.

In short i would consider trying the Magnesium and see if it helps. you can Google magnesium or peppermint oil and esophageal spasm to see if the symptoms sound like what you are experiencing. Let me know if u try it and if it helps.

LPR - laryngo pharyngeal reflux. it is where the acid refluxes past the esophagus and into the throat and voice box causing symptoms different from gerd but from the same problem with acid.
